Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. The Benefits Specialist serves as the college’s benefits professional by administering all employee benefits programs, including Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Virginia Sickness and Disability Program (VSDP), Workers’ Compensation (WC), health benefits, retirement, and educational benefits. The Benefits Specialist conducts new hire orientation; provides benefits information and counseling sessions for employees; and develops a variety of benefits communications for college faculty and staff. Additionally, this position will manage and track the employee performance management process for classified employees; serve as back-up to the Human Resource Office, interface routinely with the VCCS Shared Services Center (SSC) for HR and Payroll matters, maintain a variety of HR reports, and execute special projects as needed to support strategic college initiatives.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.



KSA's/Required Qualifications
Working knowledge and experience in the practice of human resource management, with particular knowledge of benefits administration. Working knowledge of benefit programs, and federal and state employment laws related to human resource. Working knowledge of performance management; leave management; and payroll processing. Demonstrated ability to accurately interpret and apply complex HR policy and procedures related to benefits; and in analyzing and auditing forms and data, and performing detailed mathematical calculations related to benefits and salaries. Demonstrated excellent customer service, problem solving, and time and project management skills. Demonstrated ability to counsel faculty and employees regarding benefits, and conduct benefits training. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Demonstrated excellent written communication skills; and the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population of faculty and staff. Strong technology skills to include current software packages.

Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from a college or university with coursework in human resource management or a related field. Work experience with Commonwealth of Virginia benefits programs and leave practices, automated systems (Cardinal and HCM), and the Virginia Retirement System [VRS] is strongly preferred. Experience in a college/university human resource office is preferred. Professional HR certification is also preferred.
