Job Title: Athletics Communications Specialist
Job Summary
This position is responsible for overseeing the communications responsibilities for BYU Athletics and assigned sport(s), with a focus on spreading the digital reach of the team’s and the BYU brand. The position works in a collaborative model that prioritizes new media trends and best practices. This position helps BYU Athletics tell its own story as its own media entity, while servicing external media and broadcast partners to help amplify key messages and narratives. The current assigned team that this position would work with is women’s basketball.

What You’d Be Responsible For
- Manage media relations for assigned sport(s) and collaborate with the broader Athletic Communications team members in doing so
- Build relationships with coaches, staff and student-athletes of assigned sport(s)
- Provide PR counsel to coaches, staff and student-athletes
- Respond to media requests for information, photos, stats and other data
- Arrange media interviews for student-athletes and coaches
- Strategically communicate key storylines and narratives for media entities to help amplify BYU brand and Church messages
- Engage and build relationships within BYU-specific and national media members
- Serve as a trusted resource to the coaching staff in getting important, confidential information to help inform media-related decisions, while safeguarding the sensitive information
- Oversee press releases and stories for assigned sport
- Oversee game notes for writers, radio and TV
- Update records and statistics
- Oversee yearly content such as season review, season outlook, player and coach bios, etc.
- Report statistics and award nominations to the conference and NCAA
- Nominate coaches and student-athletes for weekly and season awards and honors.
- Collaborate with the broader social media team, the social media content for assigned sport(s), including the planning and creation of content for the accounts
- Manage press row/press box at home events
- Arrange interviews with student-athletes and coaches prior and following games at both home and away games
- Provide information and hosting services for all media, including ESPN and other high-profile outlets
- Oversee stats systems (StatCrew, NCAA Live Stats) are connected to internal network, pushing in-game data to scoreboards, apps, etc.
What Qualifies You to Apply?
A Bachelor’s degree. Experience working in digital/social media, media relations or similar field. Working knowledge of all social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, etc. Knowledge of collegiate athletics.
