JOB SUMMARY
Coordinates the activities of the athletic trainers for Mishawaka campus. Optimizes the health, safety and general well-being of all student athletes participating in school system sanctioned athletics, during practice and contest times. Records status of athletes to respective coaches and physicians. Reports to manager, school health services and works with Community Benefit Ministry Officer to ensure consistent and high quality service is maintained and to identify other opportunities.

JOB DUTIES
1. Actively demonstrates the organization’s mission and core values, and conducts oneself at all times in a manner consistent with these values.
2. Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information.
3. Coordinates designated staff and activities that are part of daily operations including, but not limited to, scheduling staff and programs, assisting in the development of forms and policies/procedures, supply and inventory, submission of bills/invoices, various activity reports, and orientation of new staff members.
4. Provides input for performance reviews and assists manager with staff development.
5. Measures outcomes and provides reports to the manager. Works with manager to create and maintain appropriate databases and measurement tools.
6. Clinical treatment:
a. Coordinates training room activities during treatment periods.
b. Administers treatments to injured or ill athletes in consultation with the team physician.
c. Responsible for the rehabilitation program and supervises the training program for the injured athlete for the purpose of returning to athletic competition.
d. Determines in consultation with team physician, if an athlete is physically able to return to competition.
e. Recognizes and manages minor injuries or illnesses during athletic practices and competition by administering first-aid treatments as required by the situation.
f. In cases of major injury or illnesses, refer to the team physician or emergency medical service for immediate attention and makes appropriate appointments and referrals.
g. Applies protective and injury preventative devices such as tape, bandaging and bracing.
h. Keeps coaches informed of the status of the injured or ill athlete, as well as the compliance of the athlete in the rehabilitation process.
i. Coordinates athletic training and supplies for teams traveling without direct athletic training support.
j. Provides contest coverage for home events in all sports including IHSAA events (as is practical and deemed a priority and so assigned). Provides coverage for all varsity football and basketball contests, home and away, when no home events conflict with schedule.
k. Works with the athletic director to ensure the school's capability for handling emergencies and medical care for ill or injured athletes.
l. Participates in team pre-participation physical examination sessions.
m. Maintains an inventory and makes recommendations for athletic training services, including ordering supplies and replacing / repairing defective equipment used in trainer's room as may be appropriate from time to time.
n. Coordinates the use of proper protective equipment, injury prevention techniques and conditioning methods with team coaches.
7. Makes appropriate recommendations and referrals for additional services. Consults with other professionals and/or appropriately seeks assistance from co-workers as needed.
8. Engages patient using interpersonal dynamics to facilitate and effective therapeutic changes. Implements and participates in injury and illness prevention procedures and education for student athletes.
9. Provides supervision and training to student athletic trainers, if an official program is provided by the school.
10. Works with Community Benefit Officer/Director to highlight services in the community both internally and externally.
11. Models appropriate behavior for class participants by a healthy, positive, and upbeat attitude.
12. Attends department staff meetings and participates in Process Improvement. Adheres to attendance policies.
13. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES


Education : Requires professional education culminating in a Bachelor of Science Degree with an emphasis in Sports Medicine/ Athletic training from an accredited academic program.

Licensure : Must be certified in the State of Indiana as an Athletic Trainer.

Position requires good communication skills, public relations skills, cooperativeness, tact, and ability to influence others.
Computer knowledge with experience in using office software required.
