Position Description

Organization: Boys & Girls Club of Portage County (non-profit, youth service)
Hours: Part-Time, Hourly (varies from 10-18 hours per week)
Location: Gateway Report Center (1007 Ellis St., Stevens Point)
Reports to: Director of Guidance Program Operations

Program Summary: The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of Portage County (BGCPC) is “To inspire and empower our youth to realize their full potential.” We provide a continuum of services through the Gateway Report Center, Youth Enrichment Services Program, and Truancy Abatement Program to help youth break the cycle of risky behavior and develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes to become productive, responsible, and caring community members. The goal of these programs is to help youth recognize the negative impacts of their behaviors/actions and identify personal strategies for redirecting their energy into more healthy and productive actions.

Position Summary: The At-Risk Teen Mentor is responsible for direct service to youth referred to any one of the special initiative programs. These duties include facilitating program plans, club management and behavior management. This position will also require the transport of Club members to and from the Club site by way of a 15-passenger van. The ideal candidate will have a clean driving record as stated in requirements.

Skills / Knowledge Required:

  • Ability to be trained in First Aid/CPR
  • Must have 2 years previous driving experience and hold a valid drivers license with clean driving record
  • Must be at least 21
  • Prior experience working with teens/youth is preferred but not required
  • Communicate effectively with teen/youth and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Courteous and professional to all staff, club members, and families.
  • Motivate youth and manage behavior problems
  • Work with the general public
  • Organize and supervise club members in a safe environment
  • Must be able to pass a reference check and background check
  • Strong organizational skills and professionalism

Primary Duties for the *At-Risk* Teen Mentor: *

  • Create safe & meaningful programs which include but are not limited to subjects of education, health and wellness, life skills, leadership, or character building
  • Promote and stimulate program participation
  • Work with members to establish a productive, positive, and safe Club environment
  • Lead daily, weekly, and special event activities including community service events
  • Ensure all programs and activities occur as scheduled
  • Provide guidance and role-modeling to Club members, in and out of Club
  • Discipline policies are enforced during each program
  • Collect outcome data when requested
  • Assist in managing court documents and case notes when necessary
  • Follow and assist with the daily & weekly cleaning schedule
  • Encourages kids to assist in cleaning the Club
  • Encourage fellow staff in meeting program goals, objectives, and outcomes
  • Develop meaningful, safe, and positive relationships with all youth and their parents, regardless of their background
  • Participate in staff performance evaluations, staff meetings, and trainings
  • May participate in special programs, events and/or field trips
  • May be able to provide First Aid/CPR
  • Complete tasks assigned by the Director, or Assistant Director
  • May need to sit in on meetings with parents

Physical Requirements / Work Environment:

  • Standing or walking for up to 8 hours a day
  • Pushing or Lifting of up to 50lbs
  • Ability to handle high noise level for extensive periods of time.
  • Ability to be trained to drive a 15-passenger shuttle van
  • Able to pass a reference and background check
