Job Description Summary

Assistant Football Coach for the varsity football program at the NCAA Division II level, specifically the Linebackers or Defensive Backs. Duties include areas such as recruitment, practice/game preparation, practice/game implementation of coaching principles, funding, promotion, and other areas assigned by the Head Football Coach. Assist the Athletic Department in a role to enhance the internal and external visibility and recognition of the Michigan Tech football program. Teach Physical Education activity classes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

1. Plan, organize, and administer the University's varsity football program with emphasis on the Linebackers or Defensive Backs.
2. Recruit football student-athletes from key areas such as Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan, as well as nationally.
3. Develop and implement football practice sessions to meet needs for individual and team improvement.
4. Evaluate MTU and opposing team capabilities to determine game strategy and manage/prepare the team for competition.
5. Enhance and promote the internal and external visibility and recognition of the University and team to alumni, and campus and off-campus groups.
6. Actively participate in fund raising activities and alumni relations.
7. Monitor and promote the academic success of football student-athletes.
8. Represent and act on behalf of the University as directed by the Head Football Coach.
9. Teach activity classes in the Department of Kinesiology & Integrative Physiology.
10. Functional supervision may be exercised over student assistants and part time assistants.
11. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives.
12. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work.

Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

  • Bachelor’s Degree

Required Experience (minimum requirements)

  • Experience playing and/or coaching football at the collegiate level, specifically the Linebackers or Defensive Backs.
  • Athletic recruiting experience
  • Commitment to comply with all NCAA rules and Michigan Tech policies and procedures.
  • Exceptional knowledge of basic football skills.

Desirable Education and/or Experience

  • Master’s Degree
  • Fundraising Experience
  • Working knowledge of the surrounding football recruiting areas, specifically Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.
