Animal Care Technician Job at Prism

General function:
Candidate will provide high quality animal care in a research vivarium that complies with the appropriate guidelines related to the care and use of laboratory rodents. Perform daily husbandry/housekeeping operations. The candidate will ensure that activities performed follow all standards set forth by NIH and OLAW as well as the IACUC and Company SOP.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Cage changing and cage washing.
  • Handle immunodeficient mice, immunocompetent mice and rats, mice implanted with human tissues, and mice and rats treated with radioactive isotopes.
  • Handle and process caging contaminated with biohazardous and radioactive materials, following appropriate protocols with precision.
  • Euthanasia.
  • Provide high quality husbandry for all housed animals, including daily health checks.
  • Accurately record daily environmental conditions in animal holding rooms.
  • Monitor cages for adequate food, water, and enrichment and replenish as needed.
  • Clean and maintain vivarium facility on a daily basis (i.e., sweep, mop, dust, restock PPE).
  • Maintain inventory of clean caging, supplies, and food/water (i.e., autoclaving).
  • Prepare, receive, unpack, and house incoming animals.
  • Some breeding colony maintenance (i.e., pair breeders, wean juveniles).
  • Record breeding, weaning, and animal identification (ear-tagging or alternative ID methods), and maintain accurate colony populations in colony management excel files.
  • Sterilize biohazardous and tissue culture waste and maintain waste disposal log sheets.
  • Maintain and archive all related paperwork and record keeping.
  • Troubleshoot vivarium and animal care related issues as they arise.
  • Perform post-operative care as directed.
  • Perform work practices in a safe and efficient manner and promote safety within the animal care facility.
  • Follow Guidelines and Protocols consistently.
  • Schedule facility maintenance work orders when necessary.
  • Perform other related duties, tasks and responsibilities as required or assigned.
  • Perform weekend health checks.

Qualifications:

  • Prior laboratory experience (2+ years working with laboratory animals), performing technical procedures and colony management practices
  • Experience working with small animals.
  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations that govern housing and management of lab animals. Knowledge of humane methods of euthanasia in laboratory animals. Ability to perform euthanasia as directed.
  • Proven skill to operate and maintain mechanical equipment (i.e., autoclave, cage washer). Ability to learn and apply principles of sanitizing and disinfecting.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills; demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills to communicate with staff, complete logs, and interpret SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).
  • Must have manual dexterity in both hands and be able to work with animals for up to 8 hours a day; lift up to 50 pounds (i.e. feed bags, animal caging); stand, walk, stoop, reach with arms, push and pull equipment; and perform repetitive motions with arms, wrists, and hands.
  • Candidate must be able to operate equipment and machinery used in animal husbandry and transport equipment, bedding, feed, and supplies throughout facility
  • Ability to work inside a controlled environment under strict atmospheric, temperature, and humidity parameters. Work may involve prolonged periods wearing PPE, such as masks, gloves, lab coat or scrubs, and other apparel as required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including some weekends and outside the normal times, including holidays as required.
  • Must not have known animal or dust allergies. May be required to obtain vaccines/tests as required by OSHA.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences or related discipline or Veterinary Technician certification or High School Diploma/GED and two (2) years related husbandry and technical experience required. AALAS certification at the ALAT level/CALAS initial level preferred.
