This position will work in Butler & Lowndes Counties with the main office location in Butler County Extension Office in Greenville, AL. *Office space available in Lowndes as well.
This is a one-year limited-term position. Continued employment is based on the continuation of extramural funding and is subject to renewal on an annual basis. Funding for this program has been continuous for over 50 years.
The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is a federally funded nutrition education program that uses a peer educator model to teach families, youth, and pregnant women with limited incomes. EFNEP programming includes basic nutrition and cooking, food safety, food resource management, food security, and physical activity.
The Alabama Cooperative Extension EFNEP Agent Assistant will work in and serve clients in Butler & Lowndes counties. The Agent Assistant has the opportunity to positively impact the health of local communities by conducting nutrition education programs with limited-resource participants in a group or one-on-one setting, including at schools, social services, community agencies, and more. This position will serve youth, families, and pregnant women.

Essential Functions
The EFNEP Agent Assistant responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
  • Have knowledge of, or be willing to gain knowledge about, food and nutrition as they relate to a healthy and affordable diet for a family
  • Provide education to multiple groups and individuals through a series of nutrition education classes
  • Create a positive, hands-on learning experience for participants
  • Actively seek out and build new partnerships to maintain consistent teaching schedule
  • Recruit and retain eligible participants for EFNEP class series
  • Follow EFNEP guidelines and use approved EFNEP nutrition education curriculum with participants Maintain accurate records, including entry and exit paperwork, attendance sheets, travel, budget reports, EFNEP supply inventory, etc.
  • Maintain a caseload according to EFNEP policies and procedures
  • Maintain a high level of communication with supervisors, mentors, and other program staff
  • Report to the County Extension Coordinator assigned as supervisor of record
  • Receive initial and continuous training from EFNEP state staff, supervisor, and fellow educators
  • Follow established guidelines as required by State and CSREES / USDA


The Agent Assistant will work a flexible 40-hour work week schedule that may include some early mornings and late afternoons, based on the needs of participants.
