Children learn by exploring their world. At The University of Washington Children's Center at Laurel Village, we have designed an environment in which children are encouraged to explore a wide variety of learning experiences. The interests and needs of the children determine the focus of our child-centered environment. The teachings of Magda Gerber and Maria Montessori combined with the HighScope approach and recommendations from the National Association for the Education of Young Children play an integral part in the design of our early childhood program.
We believe that a child's most critical learning period occurs during the first six years of life. In every age group, children are encouraged to engage in activities that are intellectually stimulating, developmentally appropriate, hands-on and creative. Our staff supports and nurtures each child's own timeline for growth and development.
We believe children need to feel loved, accepted and secure. At The University of Washington Children's Center at Laurel Village, children are cherished for who they are. Each child is respected for their uniqueness and in turn learns to respect the uniqueness of others.
