General Description

The Academic Support Coordinator supports the Mission and Values of Boys Hope Girls Hope by supporting the various needs of the Residential and Academy Programs for scholars, including school year and summer programs. The Academic Support Counselor will also assist the Collegian Support Coordinator in helping to meet the needs of BHGH college students.

Major tasks include academic support, collecting data, intellectual enrichment, activities surrounding academic success and community involvement, administrative tasks related to scholar academics and goals. The Academic Support Coordinator works closely with Residential Counselors, Scholar Support Counselors and Collegian Support Coordinator to provides direct service to all BHGH scholars/collegians. The Academic Support Coordinator reports to the Executive Director.

Major Responsibilities

I. Instructional Support

a. Monitor academic progress and needs of residential, collegian and academy scholars.

b. Communicate with tutors any specific information regarding scholar academic needs, including providing written direction based on scholar’s weekly assignments or in response to directives from teachers

c. Provide study time for residential scholars, individual tutoring and academic assistance to scholars and locate tutors for scholars.

d. Develop and monitor academic improvement plans for residential scholars, and academic goals for service plans.

e. Assist with Implementing or developing intellectually enriching activities for the scholars

f. Assist with planning and execution of college preparation and college activities.

g. Assist Collegian Support Specialist with providing and locating academic support and resources for collegians.

II. School Presence/Collaboration

a. Maintain regular contact with teachers/college professors in each program as needed

b. Attend school meetings and progress sessions for residential scholars and collegians when requested

c. Participate in parent organizations or academically oriented extracurricular activities.

III. Intellectual Enrichment

a. Identify, track, and promote age-appropriate essential experiences like community service activities to supplement school-based learning

b. Plan, coordinate and participate in community service opportunities for individual scholars and groups of scholars

c. Maintain, and role model for scholars, positive relations with neighbors, community groups, schools, authorities, peers, and parents of scholars

d. Assist in the implementation of in-home curricula (e.g., life skills training, character development)

e. Assist Collegian Support Coordinator with completing Collegian Support Plans

IV. Training

a. Participate in on-site, off site and on the job training

b. Complete supplemental reading and instruction as assigned on academic success strategies for scholars and collegians.

c. With supervisor, identify and attend as needed additional training programs to supplement skills.

V. Support Activities

a. Complete required documentation of activities in a timely and accurate fashion

b. Properly track and document all approved expenses

c. Support the development of scholars and collegians in accordance with individual plans

d. Will perform a variety of support functions as needed to support the overall success of the programs.

e. In collaboration with academy and residential manager collect and interpret data

Critical Criteria

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, be actively pursuing a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, or a high school diploma with at least two years’ experience working with youth in an educational setting. A valid Michigan driver's license and current CPR and first aid required.

Members will be required to submit to a criminal history background check, drug screening and provide results of a physical examination. State licensing agencies may have additional requirements. Good physical and mental health and the following competencies are important for success:

Work Conditions

This is a professional position based primarily in the residential home of Boys Hope Girls Hope of Detroit, though the incumbent may be required to travel to and work with academy and collegian students in the city to implement program activities. Employee will work during afterschool and evening hours, in addition to occasional weekends. During peak program activities, longer hours may be required.

The position requires annual participation in continuing education, including Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training, satisfied through in-house programs offered by Boys Hope Girls Hope or third-party providers. The position will have at least an annual performance evaluation.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee will assist in monitoring program participants and volunteers.
