Montezuma County is located in the SW corner of Colorado. County population is around 28,000 with estimated growth of 30,000 by 2025. Land mass within the county is approximately 1/3 private, 1/3 tribal reservation, and 1/3 public. The economy is based on services, oil and gas development, agriculture, and tourism. There are three school districts: Cortez RE-1 with a pre-school, five elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school; Mancos RE-6 with a pre-school, an elementary school, a middle school, and a high school; and Dolores RE-4A with a pre-school, an elementary school, a middle school, and a high school. There is also a Montessori school, a charter school, and an open high school. SW Colorado Community College, a division of Pueblo Community College, is also located here. Southwest Health Systems is the primary health care provider in the County with a hospital and several clinics. There are also private practice physicians available. The climate and topography are diverse, including mountains, canyons, and deserts. Mesa Verde National Park, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument and San Juan National Forest are in Montezuma County, as well as McPhee Reservoir, the second largest body of water in Colorado. The 4-H program is active with 197 members and 43 volunteer leaders in numerous clubs.

Position Summary
Colorado State University Extension and Montezuma County are seeking a youth development professional with the experience and skills to lead a diverse and inclusive youth development program. The person will have a proven track record of developing and managing volunteers, building program capacity, creating innovative programming opportunities, and fostering both internal and external collaboration and teamwork. The Extension Agent will be an effective communicator with the experience and skills to engage with a variety of people and groups. The individual in this position provides leadership, guidance, and management to the 4-H youth development program in Montezuma County. They work as a member of the local county Extension team and as a local representative of Colorado State University.
This individual will work under the programmatic guidance of the State 4-H Office and will regularly collaborate with other Extension staff across program and county lines as well as actively participate on State 4-H teams and committees.
CSU Extension Agents throughout the state work as a team and share expertise. This individual works under the guidance and supervision of the Montezuma County Extension Director.
Required Job Qualifications
- Completed bachelor’s degree.
- Degree must have been conferred in agricultural sciences, youth development, Extension education or a closely related field.
- A successful candidate without a completed master’s degree will be required to complete a master’s degree within five years from the start of employment. The degree process must be initiated with 12 months of the hire date. Failure to do so will result in termination unless a compelling reason is accepted by the Vice President of Engagement and Extension.
- Experience in working with youth and youth organizations.
- Demonstrated experience/training in the recruitment, training, and management of volunteers.
- Ability to communicate through teaching, public speaking/presentation, and writing as demonstrated through application materials and experience.
- Demonstrated experience working with people as individuals and in groups; ability to forge equitable and successful partnerships with other professionals and organizations.
- Demonstrated use of technology in managing and/or delivering educational programs.
- Knowledge of budget management and experience with revenue generation (user fees, grants, fundraising).
- Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Completed master’s degree.
- Commitment to include diverse voices in program prioritization and planning, and a commitment to developing and delivering both inclusive and targeted programming.
- Experience planning educational events, fundraising, grantsmanship, and working in teams .
- Experience marketing and/or delivering educational programming using online, mass media, and/or social media methods.
- Bilingual (English-Spanish).

- Provide leadership and support for all Montezuma County 4-H programming. Cooperate with other 4-H Agents in the San Juan Basin Region (Dolores, La Plata, Archuleta counties in Colorado; San Juan County, New Mexico) for regional programming.
- Actively participate in Extension work teams to provide youth development expertise for program development, delivery, and evaluation efforts statewide.
- Actively participate in the MQA program, project area, and 4-H Council – member training.
- Seek out and manage external funding, personnel, and in-kind resources to support programming efforts.
