SECONDARY SHELTERED ENGLISH IMMERSION MATH TEACHER

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, teaches ELL/LEP (English Language Learners/ Limited
English Proficient) students in grades 6-12. Assists in other school programs as assigned, and creates
a flexible program and an environment favorable to learning and personal growth in accordance with
each student's ability.

Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, Master’s Degree

preferred in ESL, and/or Bilingual Education

Credential: Valid certification by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Middle School
and/or High School ELL, ESL and/or Bilingual teacher. Dually certified in 6-12 Math.
Experience: Demonstrated competence in the area of certification. Experience teaching LEP
students.
Training and Experience: Training in the teaching of English as a Second Language and
experience working with LEP students,
Knowledge Required: Second Language Acquisition Theories. ELPBO (English Language
Learners Proficiency Benchmarks and Outcomes) National Standards for the Teaching of
English as a Second Language and Knowledge of Culture of ELL students. Knowledge
of a variety of assessments appropriate for ELL students. Knowledge of one or more
foreign languages a plus.
Abilities Required: Ability to plan and deliver effective instruction to ELL students. Ability to
differentiate instruction, ability to administer all required testing and assessments of ELL students such as
MEPA, MELA-O and other Oral proficiency tests. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with
students, parents, colleagues and administrators.
Skills Required: Effective classroom management skills, excellent Listening Speaking, Reading
and Writing Skills in the English Language. Solid interpersonal skills and organizational
skills.

Supervision:
Supervision Scope: Ensures appropriate supervision of ELL students in the classroom, and at
various school sponsored activities and events such as school assemblies, field trips
etc.
Supervision Given and Received: Works under the supervision of the principal of the school or
his/her designee and the ELL director.

Description of Duties:

Diagnoses the English needs of pupils and selects, develops and /or adapts the curriculum and other
instructional materials to fill the needs of his/her students.

Teaches ESL curricula to non-native English speaking pupils utilizing regular education course of study,
adapted ELL benchmarks for the appropriate grade, as well as other appropriate learning activities.
Instructs students in essential communication skills to facilitate their transition into the regular
instructional program.
Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each
pupil to the extent possible.
Provides a safe and effective learning environment to establish and reinforce attitudes and social skills
useful in the regular program.
Stimulates the development of positive self-images and ethnic pride in pupils.
Cooperates with site staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve attitude and learning problems.
Implements administration of all required testing programs of ELL students (MELA-O, MEPA and
MCAS) for the appropriate grade level.
Maintains current folders on each SEI student assigned to his/her class according to DOE guidelines and
instructions provided by the district ELL director.
Cooperates with regular education staff to ensure gradual and effective integration of ELL students into
regular education classes.
Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or
self-selected professional growth activities.
Maintains an auditable record of pupil attendance and makes daily reports of pupils absent each period.
Participates cooperatively with the principal or his designee to develop the method by which he will be
evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative
regulations and procedures of the district.
Evaluates each student's performance and growth in knowledge and understanding, and prepares progress
reports.
Selects and requisitions instructional materials, books, etc., and maintains inventory records.
Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
Cooperates in school-wide supervision of students during out-of-class activities.
Participates in faculty and/or District committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
