1A Shift Boiler Operator Job at Order of Saint Benedict/Saint John's Abbey

This position reports to the Chief Engineer and/or Assistant Chief Engineer. Operators are responsible for keeping power plant operating at all times. Must have knowledge of all shifts, work a rotating shift, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. This position is subject to call back at the discretion of the Chief, Assistant Chief, or their designee.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Responsible for the operation of all power plant equipment.

a) 3 boilers operating at 180 P.S.I., natural gas/fuel oil

b) 2 steam turbine generator units - 800 kw capacity

c) 2 diesel generator units - 800 kw capacity

d) 2 - 750 ton, 1 - 900-ton steam absorption chillers = 2,400-ton total

e) 2 cooling tower systems each containing multiple cells

f) 3 Boiler feed water pumps 1 steam turbine driven & 2 electric motor driven

g) Electrical switch gear to sync our power to Xcel for distribution into campus electrical grid

h) Aeration gravel Water Filtration system for the treatment and removal of iron and manganese within the potable domestic water distribution system.

i) 3 zeolite water softeners complete with brine storage and reclamation

j) Reverse Osmosis filtration for boiler water make-up

k) 2 vane type air compressors with filtration and dryers

l) Pumps, fans and motors of various sizes

m) Operate vacuum chlorine system for the disinfection of potable water

2. Make minor repairs and adjustments.

3. Under direction of Chief, Assistant Chief, or their designee the start- up and shut-down of boilers, turbine generators and auxiliaries.

4. Monitor various steam, electrical, and building management system meters using computer-based tracking-reporting and tracking abnormalities. This will include KMC building temperatures, etc.

5. Blow down all boilers as necessary according to results of boiler water tests.

6. Test boiler water to determine condition of water daily. (This will determine amount of chemical needed and amount of blowdown).

7. Adjust chemical feed rate for boilers.

8. Test safety equipment on all boilers that are online every shift, (low water alarm, low water cut-off).

9. Make adjustments as necessary in the generation of electricity according to thermal demand for campus heating or cooling.

10. Take several readings and record per shift on all operating plant equipment.

11. Record readings on chiller when operating.

12. Record reading of all plant meters daily using Microsoft excel spreadsheets.

13. Start and test diesel generator units as directed by Chief or Assistant chief or their designee.

14. Responsible for day to day operation of domestic water system maintaining proper Water Tower level

a) Start and stop pumps

b) Addition of chlorine as a disinfectant as necessary

c) Back wash filter when necessary

d) Regenerate water softeners, as required

15. Assist with equipment maintenance as directed.

16. Ability to operate bobcat loader and forklift.

17. Responsible for general housekeeping, sweep and scrub floors, wipe equipment, etc.

18. Answer telephone and take messages.

19. Assist other department personnel when they come for supplies or tools.

20. Know and use confined space entry procedures.

21. Ability to enter a boiler drum and fire box for cleaning.

22. Effectively communicate pertinent operation, equipment breakdown, and maintenance needs, etc. during shift overlap, verbally and/or via entries into a daily logbook.

23. Required to conduct operational checks at Wastewater Treatment Plant as needed.

24. Perform other duties as assigned by Chief, Assistant Chief, or their designee.

MINIMUM DESIREABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Minnesota First Class A engineer’s license.

2. Three years’ experience in operating and/or maintaining boilers and turbines; or mechanical knowledge and aptitude to gain required experience/licensure.

3. Ability to work rotating shifts as assigned by the Chief, Assistant Chief, or their designee.

4. Ability to think and act quickly in an emergency.

5. Ability to work in varying climatic and temperature conditions.

6. High school graduate.

7. Computer knowledge and proficiency required (Microsoft Office); and the ability to learn new control systems and software.

8. Ability to operate bobcat/forklift and other mechanical equipment as required.

9. Ability to lift 70 pounds minimum.

10. Ability to report to work in a reasonable time during emergencies.

11. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

3. Ability to acquire an understanding of the character and mission of the Order of Saint Benedict.

4. A willingness to maintain a high level of competence. Discreet judgment and confidentiality are expected at this level of responsibility.
