Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is seeking a
Waste Characterization Specialist (Senior II or Principal) to be based in our Aiken, SC location on the Savannah River Site (SRS).
A Waste Characterization Specialist (Senior II or Principal) provides characterization and program support for all radiological and non-radiological waste types (i.e., Low Level Waste, High Level Waste, Mixed Waste, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, Transuranic Waste). The Waste Characterization Specialist (Senior II or Principal) provides broad-based technical and engineering support for ongoing waste management efforts and develops and/or performs engineering calculations to support waste management and characterization efforts. A Waste Characterization Specialist (Senior II or Principal) identifies documentation to be revised (e.g., waste streams profiles, procedures, Waste Certification Plan) based on results of calculations and other efforts; updates documents accordingly; ensures effective implementation of waste management programs

- Scopes technical tasks and develops creative solutions to assigned problems of basic to difficult complexity.
- Incorporates conventional engineering or scientific practices to a broad range of complex technical requirements to meet the Waste Program needs.
- Provides leadership and direction to facility personnel involved with all aspects of waste management, packaging, and transportation.
- Leads waste stream profile technical documentation revisions and prepares modeling to support calculations and incorporates into Waste Certification Plans.
- Interfaces with the Solid Waste Engineering group to resolve technical questions concerning waste stream profiles, calculations, packaging, and procedures.
- Performs field walk downs and assessments to ensure field work is performed to meet waste stream profiles, calculations and procedures.
- Reviews work packages for potential generation of waste streams.
- Verifies, tests, and performs calculations for compliance with applicable engineering standards and waste acceptance criteria requirements. Performs verification of calculations, reports, and other documents/data performed by others for accuracy and subject matter expertise.
- Evaluates proposals and makes recommendations based on proposed waste projects/tasks in area of assignment.
- Performs waste generation forecasting and prepares cost and schedule estimates on proposed waste projects/tasks in assigned area.
- Exemplifies cost and schedule consciousness through timely completion of assigned tasks and projects to meet deadlines and milestones.
- Writes/edits manuals and other documents supporting or publicizing information about the Waste Program.
- May prepare and present presentations to organization leaders or other stakeholders.
- Obtains safety training, obeys safety rules, and makes safety an integral part of each task.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
To qualify as a Senior Waste Characterization Specialist II (Grade 69):
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a technical discipline (e.g. science, engineering) and 5+ years of related experience.
To qualify as a Principal Waste Characterization Specialist (Grade 70):
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in a technical discipline (e.g. science, engineering) and 6+ years of related experience.
