Job Description:

Title: Warehouse Specialist

Classification: Full-time, Non-exempt, 40 hours/week; Monday - Friday; 7:00a-3:00p

Location: South Bend, IN / On-site

Reports to: Warehouse Manager

Salary Range: $11.00 - $14.00/Hour

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana works in partnership with the community to feed the hungry, increase awareness of the effects of hunger and lead programs designed to alleviate hunger. The Food Bank serves Elkhart, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall, Starke and St. Joseph Counties and is a member of Feeding America, Feeding Indiana’s Hungry and United Way.

Job Summary:

The Warehouse Specialist coordinates and organizes product for storage, sorting and distribution in a timely and safe manner. This position maintains equipment and adhere to all safety practices and procedures. The person in this role will assist teammates with inventory, inspections and selecting orders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the selection of agency shopping orders in an accurate and timely manner with attention to food safety.
  • Responsible for the pre-selection of all orders for next day deliveries by Agency drivers.
  • Moves food product and related materials for inspection and/or sorting.
  • Assists with the inventory, distribution, location staging, and proper recordkeeping of fresh, frozen and dry foods received and delivered.
  • Participate in and contribute to accurate inventory and cycle counts.
  • Maintains the organization and cleanliness of the work area including coolers, freezers and distribution dry storage areas, and performs light duty cleaning in other areas as needed.
  • Unload incoming donations and purchased product, and verifies the weight and count of all items, then accurately records donations on receiving reports. Affix pallet tag to received product and move in the proper storage area.
  • Checks received product for discrepancies and reports discrepancies to the Warehouse Manager.
  • Perform daily inspections for refrigeration sanitation and neatness including cleaning cardboard and plastic shrink wrap, moving pallets and preparing for anticipated next day work.
  • Maintain and inspect all warehouse equipment to ensure proper working condition and report issues to supervisor.
  • Maintain and log updated temperature checks.
  • Serve as back-up for Agency Distribution Coordinator and assist agencies with loading product into vehicles.
  • Assist Warehouse Service Coordinator in the selection of USDA orders.
  • Assist in daily operation of warehouse and other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for Education, Training and Experience:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required
  • Two to four years of warehouse related experience.
  • One year forklift experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of computer functions, Microsoft Suite and able to accurately enter data.
  • Become ServSafe certified; commit to adhering to safe food handling and storage guidelines and practices.
  • Valid driver’s license for operating forklift truck required.
  • Ability to operate a variety of warehouse equipment - such as forklifts and power tools - and the ability to learn other equipment as needed. Must be able to work in hot and cold climates – such as with freezer and refrigeration units.

Required Background, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to manage time effectively and to multitask.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and interact positively with a variety of personalities both internally and externally.
  • Ability to perform basic math, maintain records and write legibly.
  • Ability to be a strong team player, work independently and collaborate with others as appropriate.
  • Ability to accurately sort, count, and verify items received.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite to maintain records, input data, and create reports.

Working Conditions:

This position requires frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, climbing and crouching. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or move 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds with assistance or use of equipment. This position works in extreme temperature changes involving freezer and refrigeration units.

Employment requires a negative drug screening and successful background check.
