Vice President, Merit Park Job at Give Merit

Give Merit Detroit, MI 48204

The Merit Park Vice President will be responsible for assisting with the start-up of Merit Park, while also executing the defined strategic plan. This individual will oversee all aspects of the park including, but not limited to; monitoring performance, evaluating strategic goal progression, building and sustaining vendor and community partner relationships, and establishing defined operational policies. The application deadline for this position is Midnight EST on January 4, 2023.

Description

Since 2011, Give Merit has worked extensively to provide high quality youth development programming to young people in the City of Detroit through its primary program, FATE – an eight-year, cohort-based program currently supporting 175 young people. Give Merit has disbursed over $250,000 in scholarships for its participants to pursue their post-secondary aspirations. FATE has allowed Give Merit to see firsthand what the young people of Detroit are capable of if given resources and opportunities.

The FATE program operates out of a beautiful 5,600 square foot space in the back of Straight Gate International Church off Grand River and Livernois in Detroit, Michigan. Given the lack of adequate recreation and play options available in this neighborhood, Give Merit is leveraging existing partnerships and building upon its current programming to develop a community-driven, community-focused, and community-operated park facility. The site will replace abandoned buildings and blight, and offer access to organized sports, free play, food/retail vendors, and public performance space.

A park of opportunity. An opportunity to play and be active. An opportunity to build community in a safe space. An opportunity to learn and prepare for 21st century careers. An opportunity for young people throughout the City of Detroit to create their own future.

Give Merit anticipates that Merit Park will allow youth impact to grow from the hundreds to the thousands.

The goal of Merit Park is to develop a holistic life skills training and fitness center for young people to have a safe place to play and be active; for neighborhood residents to build stronger relationships and ties to the people and places that surround them; and for Give Merit to greatly expand the number of youth it serves and impacts.

This role requires someone to continuously think outside the box while creating a sustainable park model that can inform other communities of color how developments of this nature can drive neighborhood revitalization. Merit Park is one element of a larger community redevelopment initiative rooted in equity and countering systemic racism, employing a non-displacement strategy. This position is expected to function effectively with little supervision.
