The Humane Society of Tacoma & Pierce County is eagerly seeking full-time and part-time veterinarians.
Located in the Puget Sound region of the Pacific Northwest, there is access to year-round nature or seek
to be a close drive to several major urban centers including the iconic Space Needle.

As the largest and oldest intake shelter in Washington State, you would be joining a well-established and
respected community organization. We work daily to end pet homelessness and to provide top-quality
care to dogs, cats and other animals with medical and surgical needs who would otherwise not have a
chance.

We have a full-service animal care facility with in-house laboratory testing, digital dental and full body
radiology, and ultrasound available. The Humane Society also has a full-service veterinary care area and
vet department team. Our assistants and technicians are highly trained and qualified with multiple years
of experience in the shelter and a strong passion for their job, as well as a dedicated surgical suite for
HQHVSN.

Details of this position:

  • This can be a part-time position (2-3 days/week) or a full-time position (preferred)
  • Full time veterinarians have a flexible, 40 hour a week schedule, either working 4 or 5 days weekly
based on preference
  • WA State DVM license in good standing.
  • Current ability or willingness to learn techniques to perform 30-40 sterilization procedures per day
with a mixture of dogs and cats and pediatric and adult patients.
  • Official training in HQHVSN techniques will be offered to the right candidate and the cost fully
covered by the shelter.
  • Perform examinations and determine treatment plans for our in-house and foster population of
rescued animals, and consult and collaborate with specialty veterinary partners on special cases.
  • Administrative responsibilities include upholding and updating our current medical procedures and

protocols in keeping with industry best practices, assisting in establishing new protocols as needed,
providing insight and oversight for in-house and foster animals with complex medical or surgical
needs, and leading and mentoring a professional and dedicated veterinary team.

  • No weekend days based on current schedule, although there may be an occasional need for fill in
work on the weekend.
  • No after hours or on call routinely expected of staff veterinarians, although there may be an
occasional need to fill in for on call services for the foster team and veterinary staff (only via phone
and text), with appropriate compensation. Rotating on call for holidays by phone or text only from
the technicians, but no expectation to come into the shelter.
  • Pay will be offered as a per diem rate for part-time work, or an exempt salary rate full-time annual
salary

Additional requirements:

  • Experience with spay/neuter and other routine soft tissue surgeries.
  • Clinical experience in a fast-paced shelter or private practice medicine setting, treating health
conditions common in shelter populations and owned pets.
  • A self-starter who is organized, innovative, flexible, detail-oriented, and passionate about our
goals and objectives.
  • The ideal candidate is personable, outgoing, patient, professional, empathetic, mature, and
effective in engaging with a culturally diverse community.
  • Strong sense of initiative and ability to problem-solve, prioritize appropriately, and work
independently.
  • Minimum 3 years in clinical practice or shelter medicine preferred, but willing to work with and

mentor the right new graduate with a strong interest in shelter medicine.
