The Mauricio Gaston Institute for Latino Community Development and Public Policy was established in 1989 at the University of Massachusetts Boston in response to a need for an improved understanding of the Latinx experience in the Commonwealth. Its summer educational programs for Boston Public School Latino students and English Learners - ALERTA (grades 4-5) and TAG (grades 6-12) - give participants the academic and social-emotional skills needed to break the cycle of poverty through success in secondary and higher education. We host summer programs, school year academies, and field trips. Through the youth employment program, we seek assistants to help us organize, digitalize, and archive over 36 years’ worth of historical programming and student information. In addition, we seek assistants to help us research our program’s best practices and the current needs of Boston city youth. Through the SuccessLink Employment Program, teens will also serve as collaborators and help lead focus groups and serve as the voice of our students as we plan the services, activities, and field trips that we will provide in the Spring and Summer. We aim to build our teen employees’ leadership skills and explore their interests in becoming future teaching assistants, educators, or administrators. Our ultimate goal is for our youth to gain valuable work experience in serving other students and their community from an administrative perspective and in the classroom. We hope that the teens working with us now will have an investment and interest in working with us during our summer program as well.
