Position Summary*
The role of the Teacher Residency Program is to prepare recent college graduates and career changers for a classroom teaching career within the Making Waves Academy (MWA) community, eventually becoming fully certificated teachers. During the residency year, Teacher Residents will commit to a rigorous and supportive program that develops highly-effective teachers. The year-long teacher residency is designed to help residents step into the classroom as certificated teachers ready to make an impact on student achievement.

Key areas of focus of the program is to cultivate individuals in becoming effective teachers in service of students and families from historically high-need communities. Residents will continuously develop in the following areas of teaching competencies such as standards-aligned instructions, best-practice teaching strategies, classroom management, student engagement, and strategies to build authentic relationships with students and parents. Fueled by the desire to establish themselves as a long-term teacher, candidates will also learn MWA’s foundational elements of educating for change, specifically the tenets of cultural competency, social-emotional learning, and growth mindset.

The program uses a gradual release model that allows Teacher Residents to observe instruction in and out of their content area and co-teaching within their assignment before beginning their 16-week student teaching assignment. Teacher Residents will also perform supervision duties as well as attend some selective school activities. No previous teaching experience is needed.

Primary Responsibilities*

Instructional Development
Collaborate with the mentor’s teacher throughout the year to:

  • Develop lesson plans, unit plans, and scope and sequence plans that are aligned with SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, & Timely) framework and content standards
  • Implement various technology tools and deliver partial or whole lessons to students.
  • Learn, implement and innovate dynamic sets of formative and summative assessment tools to create high impact data-driven instruction within content and across grade levels.
  • Learn and apply key elements of the standard-aligned, rigorous and culturally relevant curriculum.
  • Develop and practice classroom management in collaboration with student support and academic departments.
  • Practice using various technology tools to help generate useful formative assessments in the classroom in real-time.

Communication and Frameworks

  • Communicate proactively and professionally with the Director of Richmond-Cohort Teacher Residency and MWA designated supervisor as well as stakeholders within the MWA (i.e. mentor, administrators and students) and Alder Graduate School of Education (i.e. student service, credentialing specialist, etc.).
  • Learn key elements of MWA’s framework to support students holistically and engage in school-wide and community-based initiatives towards equitable practices in service for all students.

Master Program Coursework and Credential Criteria

  • Complete Alder’s Masters courses (4-5 classes/ semester with two of those being Site-specific seminar and fieldwork).
  • Maintain good standing for all assignments in all the courses
  • Reach milestones of gradual release sequence throughout the academic year (AY)
  • Maintain good standing in credentialing tests and credentialing earning coursework to earn clear preliminary teaching certificate at the end of AY

  • Participate in the school community – attending school competitions, performances, assemblies, and extracurricular activities.

  • Attend weekly Teacher Resident seminars.
  • Take direction from the Director of Teacher Residency and MWA assigned supervisor
  • Assist with campus supervision duties as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, photocopiers and smartphones.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary, and sit for long periods of time.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree by June, before the new school year
  • Passing score on CBEST by August of the new school year
  • Passing scores on all CSET subtests by December of the new school year

Preferred

  • Preferred GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last 60 hours of university coursework
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred but not required
