I. POSITION DUTIES

A. To utilize specialized knowledge of surgical techniques while giving direct and indirect patient care.

1. Demonstrates and adheres to principles of aseptic techniques.

2. Knowledgeable of all basic set-ups for surgical procedures.

3. Assists in ensuring patient safety.

B. To perform the tasks of the “scrub” role.

1. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves members of surgical team following aseptic techniques.

2. Assists in set up of operating room with all necessary equipment and supplies.

3. Assists with the preparation, transportation, and monitoring of patients.

4. Arranges instruments according to routine plastics procedure.

5. Handles instruments according to routine for plastics procedure.

6. Maintains sterile field throughout the surgical procedure.

7. Performs room clean up following procedures, as well as general housekeeping duties.

8. Provides assistance in emergency situations as directed.

9. Functions in the role of first or second assistant following successful skills demonstration.

C. To perform the tasks of surgical instruments and supply preparation.

1. Cleaning, wrapping, and sterilizing instruments, trays, and supplies.

2. Ensures availability of sterile instruments and supplies daily.

3. Checks all sterilized items for expiration dates.

4. Performs routine maintenance of instruments and equipment.

5. Tracks and records lost/missing instruments and notifies OR manager/ Practice Administrator as needed

6. Maintains inventory of instruments in work area.

7. Coordinates instrument repairs.

8. Provides a clean, safe, and orderly work area and performs general housekeeping duties.

D. To function efficiently as a member of the surgical team.

1. Provides assistance to team members, physicians, and anesthesia personnel as needed (i.e. reliability, initiative, work relations, training needs).

2. Escorts patients to procedure room and prepares for physician.

3. Assists with ordering, stocking, preparation, and waste management of supplies.

4. Performs other related duties as assigned.

E. To support quality activities.

1. Develop communication skills and promotes positive co-worker relationships to ensure continuity of care.

2. Participates in on-going educational programs to enhance patient care.

3. Maintains current CPR certification.

4.Surgical Technician Certification strongly preferred
