Giant Machines Software New York, NY

Summer Teaching Assistant 2023

OVERVIEW

Giant Machines (formerly Upperline Code) is looking for Summer Teaching Assistants as it pursues its mission of empowering students and teachers to change the world with code. You’d be joining a small but quickly-growing organization that already has partnerships with nonprofits like the NYC DOE’s CSforAll, Break Through Tech, and Prep for Prep, in addition to Fortune 100 companies like Google and sponsors of FinTech Focus. We believe that technology has the ability to transform students’ lives and careers, and we are driven by the pressing need for inclusive, rigorous, and engaging computer science education.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching Assistants will play important roles in shaping the class culture of our summer coding courses. As a summer Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Support Teachers: You’ll spend your time in the classroom working closely with 1-2 teachers, helping to deliver content, problem-solve any unexpected roadblocks, answer questions, and more.
  • Build Classroom Culture: You will play a vital role in building a strong classroom culture, with chances to lead team-building games, provide feedback on curriculum and instructional strategies, and work individually with students.
  • Manage Classroom Logistics: You will be responsible for managing all of the non-instructional systems that make a classroom run smoothly (i.e attendance, classroom logistics, student group work, etc.)

COMMITMENT

Each Teaching Assistant will be required to work between 3 to 6 weeks. In general, TAs will be expected to be at work from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM EST every weekday of their summer commitment. You must also be available for TA training on Thursday, June 29th from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM, and Friday, July 7th from 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM. TAs earn a weekly stipend of $600 for their teaching weeks and $15/hr for their attendance to the TA training sessions.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Teaching Assistants come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. In general, they are:

  • High school seniors or college students who are graduates of a Giant Machines (formerly Upperline Code) course, a similar coding course/camp, and/or college students that are pursuing a degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Experience working with students younger than or similar in age to them.
  • Passionate about empowering other students and sharing their knowledge.
  • Highly organized and responsible.
  • Eager to take initiative to learn new skills and teach them to students.
  • Highly reflective and receptive to feedback.

What do former Teaching Assistants have to say about their experience?

“Although it was my first year teaching with Upperline, I can confidently say that now I feel as though I am part of the Upperline family. I think that this alone shows how amazing and welcoming of a company it is, and this same feeling carries over to the spirit of individual classes. I felt that the classes were both fun and informative, and this created a great learning environment for both the teaching team and the students.” - Savannah

“I love the environment that Upperline creates and the respect that you all show for the teachers and TAs. It's always fun to work here.” - Flabica

Upperline’s strong community and value in learning to code was the reason why I fell more in love with coding, and I wanted to give back...It’s an amazing experience to see your students come in on day one knowing little about coding to developing launching pages and websites that can rival the webpages of current industries three weeks later.” - Emmanuel
