We are seeking energetic and motivated individuals to bring new and exciting programs to campers, creating a safe and fun experience for the youth of Deerfield Beach. Site Supervisors provide leadership, supervision and quality control to assigned summer camp program site, campers and counselors. This is a temporary position working with children 6 through 15 years of age. Reporting to the Parks & Recreation Manager I, Site Supervisors will plan, implement and participate in well-organized and varied indoor and outdoor recreational/athletic activities and special events. Site Supervisors are responsible for day-to-day camp operations, administrative duties, supervision and safety of all participants in summer camp program.
Salary Range $24.25 - $30.92
- Provide leadership to camp counselors and campers.
- Lead staff to deal with communication to parents.
- Lead staff to deal with both emergency and non-emergency health issues such as lice, flu, bloody noses, etc.
- Ensure the staff is complying with policies and procedures set by The City of Deerfield Beach. Including but not limited to, record keeping, adhering to uniform policies, payroll and attendance.
- Ensure the staff and campers are maintaining daily scheduled routines, traditions and programming.
- Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp and all program areas including field trip locations.
- Supervise as many as 16 staff members and up to 150 children on a daily basis and at multiple locations.
- Teach young staff to foster positive youth development and support a positive work environment.
- Assist in the program content and structure while working closely with Assistant Site Supervisor, camp leadership, parents and families.
- Oversee all camp activities to ensure appropriate counselor coverage, and assist counselors with, as well as participate in all camp recreational activities and programs (i.e. pool, art/crafts, sports, games etc.).
- Regulate and uphold check in/ out procedures by requiring ID for all adults and checking registration forms.
- Supervise and provide a safe and healthy environment, both physically and mentally, to ensure the operation of a quality children’s program.
- Organize, lead and provide a variety of high-quality small and large group activities each week. Activities may include crafts, nature, songs, games, opening and closing ceremonies, swimming, Family Night, etc. This includes time spent on the bus.
- Manage children's behavior and act as a role model and mentor. Model constructive participation in all daily activities and field trips.
- Communicates with campers’ parents/guardians regarding experiences and report concerns to camp leadership.
- Ensure all children in assigned group are accounted for onsite, and on field trips; conduct headcount for groups when loading buses, upon trip arrival/departure and throughout the day.
- Ensure the camp site is presentable at all times, and is kept clean, organized and free of litter.
- Interact effectively and professionally with fellow employees, program participants, supervisors, staff, instructors and the general public.
- Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance.
- Know and understand ALL emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
- Punctuality and regular attendance are essential functions of position.
- Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Full attendance for the nine-week summer and attend all staff meetings, trainings and family events.
Education and Experience
- Verifiable work experience supervising children ages 6 – 15 in school, camp or recreational setting in the following areas: arts & crafts, dance, sport, drama, music or athletics AND
- Minimum 2-years’ experience in a summer camp, recreational or school setting.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- High School Diploma or equivalent certificate.
- First Aid and CPR Certification is mandatory and must be current throughout summer camp; certification mandatory prior to start date.
- Valid Florida Driver’s License with clean driving record, and at least 5 years’ driving history.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience with leadership/programming in recreational or educational environment.
- Ability to manage individual and group behavior in various activities and settings.
- Knowledge and ability to apply leadership and behavior-management techniques effectively.
- Ability to work with children of various ages by demonstrating patience, enthusiasm, and the ability to handle disruptive children effectively.
- Ability to interpret and appropriately apply health and safety procedures.
- Ability to lead and supervise others.
- Ability to serve as a positive role model, including attitude, punctuality, treating others with respect, sportsmanship, etc.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, parents/guardians.
Physical Demands
Depending on functional area of assignment, tasks involve periodic performance of moderately physically demanding work, which involves driving, climbing, running, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, or sitting. The employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel and move objects, tools or equipment. Task may involve extended periods of time at workstation and extended periods of time standing and/or walking. The employee must occasionally lift and or move objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distant vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Tasks are regularly performed inside and/or outside with potential exposure to adverse conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, fumes, including weather conditions such as humidity, rain, temperature fluctuations, or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Conditions of Employment
- Background check (fingerprinting) is required; all fingerprints will be checked through State of Florida’s Volunteer and Employee Criminal History System (VECHS) and the Department of Children and Families (DCF).
- Must successfully pass physical test.
- Mandatory First Aid & CPR Certification, and certification must be current throughout summer camp; certification provided during training.
- Must have clean driving record and a valid driver’s license for at least 5 years to transport campers in city vehicles.
- Mandatory orientation for those selected prior to the start of camp. Location and specific dates/times will be announced at a later date.
- Must be available to work for the entire program at assigned location.
- Mandatory workday for the July 4th Celebration at the beach.
- Work shifts vary from 7:30 AM – 8:30 PM, Monday through Friday. (the city does not guarantee a consistent schedule ex 8-4)
- Temporary position, with no employee benefits or paid time off.
Employment Dates are as follows but are subject to change:
- First Aid & CPR Certification: June 3rd
- Staff Training – June 8th - 10th
- 8 Week Camp – June 12th – August 4th
- Xtend Camp August 7th – 11th
