Duties and Responsibilities
(NOTE: ** denotes Essential Functions)
- ** Serve as Banner Central Functional Financial Aid Lead and primary Banner problem solving resource for the ten campus UH System financial aid community.
- ** Perform as a functional financial aid specialist with considerable knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, regulations, theories, and systems associated with awarding of financial aid and scholarships typical of an institution of higher education.
- ** Ensure that the implementation of upgrades, patches, new versions, or third party software in conjunction with Banner complies with federal and state regulations, and UH System policies.
- ** Monitor Ellucian Banner announcements concerning Banner problem areas, reported defects, and solutions.
- ** Report defects in the Banner financial aid modules or functionality to Ellucian Banner and/or Banner Central and work closely with Banner developers to ensure the timely, accurate, and appropriate resolution of such issues.
- ** Communicate to the UH System financial aid community updates and timeframes for upgrades, patches, and new version implementations, and the impact of these changes, known Banner problems, and solutions.
- ** Work with the Banner Team on the application and documentation of Banner upgrades, patches, new versions and projects related to financial aid.
- ** Assure that Banner upgrades, patches, new versions, and projects are fully tested; problems are identified and fixed; and once fixed, approve the application of the upgrade/patch/version/project to the Banner production instance.
- ** Review Banner new release and upgrade documentation. Work with Banner Central to assure that necessary modifications for UH’s VPD environment are made.
- ** Represent the needs and concerns of the UH System financial aid community at Banner Team Leads meetings.
- ** Develop and maintain security levels and review/authorize access to the appropriate security classification when requests for Banner access are received. Provide access to appropriate security classes as new forms are added with upgrades and new versions.
- Work with the UH System financial aid community to identify financial aid reporting needs. Work with appropriate Banner Central developer(s) to ensure accurate and timely report development, maintenance and updates.
- ** Monitor, maintain, and update automated job scheduling (e.g. ISIR Dataload, Disbursements, Title IV Authorization, etc.).
- Pursue professional development activities (i.e. Ellucian Live, Federal Training, etc.) as required by changes in software and federal aid regulations.
- Determine the training needs of the UH System financial aid community and other users of the Banner financial aid module. Coordinate and arrange training sessions.
- Provide guidance to the UH System financial aid community for proper maintenance of Banner financial aid forms. Disseminate upgrade user guides and other documentation to the UH financial aid community.
- ** Communicate effectively, and work closely, with representatives of other Banner areas (i.e. Admissions, Records, Business Office, Housing, etc.).
- Work with Banner Team on implementation, maintenance, and documentation of any third party software (e.g. document imaging, campus partners, STAR, etc.) utilized in conjunction with Banner for financial aid workflows and/or processes.
- Work with the UH System financial aid community to ensure that workflows are created that will improve the efficiencies of the financial aid offices. Work with other Banner Team members to ensure that financial aid is included in workflows created in other areas.
- ** Call and chair regular meetings of the financial aid administrators from the ten UH campuses. Communicate UH System issues and policies to the group. Gather input from the group to enhance Banner usage, formulate policy, and establish guidelines.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in liberal arts, sciences, business, or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for providing financial aid services in a post-secondary setting, of which at least one year included working with Ellucian Banner financial aid module forms and processes; or equivalent education/training or experience.
2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of financial aid counseling/advising as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, theories, and systems associated with awarding of financial aid and scholarships typical of an institution of higher education.
4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine their cause and resolution in an effective, innovative, and timely manner.
5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
8. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
9. Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, or equivalent software, to perform work related tasks and assignments.
10. Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays in on- and off-campus settings as directed.
11. Demonstrated ability to write and formulate practices, processes, and procedures.
12. Ability to accept and follow simple and complex instructions.
13. Possesses considerable attention to detail.
14. Demonstrated ability to interpret, synthesize, and process complex information and be able to communicate effectively with others.
15. Experience working with Ellucian Banner financial aid module forms and processes.
16. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Desirable Qualifications
1. Extensive knowledge and experience working with financial aid information systems such as Banner, Colleague, PeopleSoft, Jenzabar, Power-Faids, EDExpress, ReportServer, FAA Access, COD, NSLDS, etc.
2. Deep understanding of Banner financial aid module and data tables.
3. Demonstrated ability to analyze, recommend, and implement automation for tasks in Banner which are currently being done manually.
4. At least three years of experience in working with Ellucian Banner financial aid module forms and processes.
