Cowlitz County Habitat Store Manager Job Description
Title: Store Manager
Full Time – 40 hours per week; Tuesday through Saturday 9:00am to 5:30pm
Reports To: CEO (Primary); Operations Director (Secondary)
Direct Reports: All Store Staff and Volunteers
Summary: The Cowlitz County Habitat for Humanity Store is a division of Cowlitz County Habitat for Humanity. The Store mission is to generate revenue through the sale of donated building materials and household items to support CCHFH’s operating budget. Through its efforts, the Store facilitates recycling, minimizes landfill waste, provides low-cost home improvement items and increases CCHFH visibility in our community.
The Store Manager is responsible for the overall management of the store’s day to day operations, playing an active role in planning for the Store’s future and for representing the Store at public and community events. Specific responsibilities include:
Operations
- Hold Chief administrative responsibility for the Store.
- Run the operation with the recognition that the Store is often one’s first impression of Habitat for Humanity.
- Ensure the store is adequately staffed with volunteers.
- Ensure quality customer service is provided and grievances are professionally handled.
- Ensure proper maintenance of the facility, equipment and vehicles.
- Maintain up to date filing system and proper record retention.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive operation manual.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and comply with accident procedures.
- Work with the Construction Manager to reserve donations for CCHFH houses.
- Develop marketing plan to build the stores visibility in the community.
- Oversee the effective merchandizing of the floor, maximizing available display space and use inventory control and pricing to ensure appropriate turnover.
Staff and Volunteer Management
- Implement and maintain personnel polices approved by the CEO and/or Board of Directors.
- Train and manage Store staff and volunteers in accordance with personnel policies and ensure all are well versed about Habitat’s program and local activities.
- In cooperation with the Volunteer Coordinator, recruit and recognize Store volunteers.
- Facilitate a positive, team orientated environment in which all staff and volunteers are given the chance to achieve their full potential.
- Address and document violations of policies and code of conduct by staff and recommend action regarding chronic or serious situations.
- Resolve situations involving volunteers in consultation with Volunteer Coordinator or Office Manager and the CEO.
- Evaluate staff performance in accordance with job descriptions and performance evaluation procedures.
Reporting and Communications
- Ensure staff meetings are held on a regular basis.
- Work with Volunteer Coordinator in recruiting, training and retaining volunteers.
- Keep the CEO informed of staff, operational and financial matters.
- Establish and implement donor recognition program.
- Develop and maintain relationships with other WA Store & other HFH state Store managers.
- Monthly written report of sales activities, expenses, volunteer hours and outreach efforts.
- Track sales data to determine categories w/ high to low volume-adjust & provide report to CEO
Finance and Administration
- Implement and monitor systems for daily cash transactions and deposits.
- Ensure monthly expenditures are within budget; request exceptions for increases.
- Work with the CEO to develop annual operating budget and recommend capital expenditures.
Policy and Planning
- Develop and recommend policy for sales, salvage, material acquisition and staffing.
- Assist in development of marketing and advertising strategy for the Store which is integrated with the overall CCHFH marketing and advertising strategy.
- Present all policy proposals to the CEO who will give approval to submit them to the Board of Directors for approval.
- Develop relationships with existing and potential donors to increase quality and quantity of donations.
Required Skills/ Experience/ Physical Requirements

- Adaptability…A quick, sound and positive decision maker in rapidly changing conditions, anticipating, addressing and solving problems.
- Self –motivation
- Ability to lead, train and mange volunteers in a positive manner.
- Knowledge of sales, marketing and construction materials.
- Effective time management and organizational skills.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Cursory knowledge of building materials.
- Basic computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, emails and social media
- Ability to post items to social media and sell sites and monitor and respond as needed
- Ability to adapt to a changing environment and unexpected shifts in priorities.
- Ability to lift 30 pounds. Work may require climbing stairs, considerable standing, bending, kneeling and reaching in awkward and tiring positions.
- Driver’s License and ability to pull clean abstract report.
Performance Indicators

- Build store assets and enhance mission of CCHFH.
- Imitative and independent action demonstrated in handling tasks assigned.
- Strong communication with donors, customers, volunteers, partner families and staff.

Reports to the CEO & Director of Operations
Compensation: $20 to $22 per hour and/or dependent upon retail and management experience; (Full Time – 40 hours per week); Medical benefits, vacation and holiday pay after 90 days, sick pay immediately applied; matching IRA program after 1 year of employment.
