BASIC FUNCTION

To write and develop written content for Vermont State University internal and external communications, including website(s), print publications, blogs, a variety of digital initiatives, including social media. Content is targeted at key constituencies: prospective students, faculty and staff, alumni, donors, community partners, and external stakeholders. The staff writer will also provide content support for marketing, admissions, alumni and development, and the office of the president.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists the Associate Director of Communications in writing content for internal and external communications, including website, social media, blogs, articles, press releases, e-newsletters, email marketing, landing pages, video and audio productions, intranet, and external media placement including radio, print, and television.
  • Conducts research, interviews subjects, and writes articles and features for university website and printed and digital publications.
  • Assists in generating copy for recruitment and development (student, faculty, and alumni profiles; program descriptions) for the University website, e-publishing channels, and collateral print material.
  • Provides editorial support for marketing, advertising, admissions, and development campaigns.
  • Develops and writes content in support of the university's admissions goals.
  • Works with marketing and design teams to develop marketing and website copy in support of VTSU’s brand management efforts.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with Vermont State University faculty, staff, students, and alumni to enable creation of content. Collaborates with staff across the university to find and develop stories in support of the Vermont State University brand and mission.
  • Supports social media and digital content strategies with Assistant Vice President of University Marketing and Communications, Associate Director of Communications, and other members of the VTSU marketing and communications team.
  • Works with the Associate Director of Communications to produce campus e-newsletters and university magazines.
  • Assists in and supports editing and proofreading as assigned.
  • Posts content on website and social medial and other digital venues as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Direct supervision is received from the Associate Director of Communications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, journalism, English, or other related field and three (3) years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.

KNOWLEGDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge:

  • Experience writing marketing and digital copy in a variety of voices for a variety of mediums, including print and digital
  • Self-starter with strong project management and organizational skills
  • Resourceful, creative, and able to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated creativity
  • Experience developing and writing news stories
  • A good eye for design
  • Knowledge of higher education a plus
  • Commitment to developing own professional knowledge regarding diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice and how it informs practices within area of expertise

Skills:

  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Experience working with website platforms such as WordPress, or other content management system
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate and make connections across the Vermont State University community
  • Solid computer skills with experience using word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Solid analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with email marketing and social media tools a plus

Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to support a diverse community and promote diverse populations, cultures, and an inclusive environment
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment
  • Ability to travel between campuses as needed

Location: Any of the five Vermont State campuses; hybrid arrangements considered.
