The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory includes the Bettis and Knolls Atomic Power Laboratories, the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and the Naval Reactors Facility which have proudly supported the nation since 1946. Job Description
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking a staff engineer for the Thermal & Hydraulic team!
Exciting changes are on the horizon for Thermal & Hydraulic (TH) Testing! The TH testing capabilities from existing facilities at Bettis and Knolls are being consolidated into a new Component Test Complex (CTC) at the Bettis site. To achieve this bold goal, numerous large-scale high pressure and temperature testing systems will be designed, procured, and installed in the facility. The TH team is seeking a staff engineer who can support the Lab through modernization efforts and who can collaborate well with test sponsoring organizations and test lab personnel to plan and execute major projects. Excellent communication skills, strong leadership ability, and creative thinking are all welcome qualities! The successful candidate will gain visibility with senior leadership by managing the project and its resources and driving innovative approaches that transform our ability to obtain TH testing data.
A successful staff engineer will be able to:
- Work with project teams to effectively plan individual projects using the established NNL and Bettis Test Programs project management guidelines and systems;
- Collaborate with new and existing test sponsors and operational TH testing facilities to support lab consolidation across sites;
- Keep communication flowing between engineers, technicians, test sponsors, vendors, senior leadership, and Naval Reactors;
- Provide oversight of project teams to enable them to achieve their project objectives;
- Find and mitigate project risks and address issues in a timely manner;
- Create and oversee application of a resource profile (WF and M&S) and proactively manage a range of procurements;
- Advise management regarding staffing needs, training opportunities, and knowledge management action plans over the project lifecycle;
- Create project specific metrics and reports as appropriate to convey progress to stakeholders.
- Champion innovative approaches to design, resourcing, and TH testing strategies.
- Apply engineering judgement with the project team to prioritize high value improvement initiatives to include in project scope.
