Position Summary:

The Special Education Teacher is responsible for planning and effectively implementing instructional programs to students requiring services outside of the public school environment that provides related academic instruction and educational services to students with severe emotional and behavioral disabilities; manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities, as required for either single or multi-grade level, subject, skill, or specialty oriented; manages a case load for students requiring special education service; and carries out requirements for successful fulfillment of professional responsibilities, including attending all staff meetings, participating in in-service training, and attending conferences.


This position does not have direct reports.

Planning & Administration

  • Participates in meetings as requested, including IEP, ITP, ETP development and IEP meetings, placement meetings, team planning meetings, staffing, and Teacher’s meetings, sharing information and opinions
  • Participates in the writing of either an Education Treatment Plans (ETP) or Individual Education Plans (IEP) and facilitates the development and implementation of therapeutic teaching strategies that correspond with the Plan
  • Is an active participant in the Treatment Team
  • Creates, monitors, and updates progress for an appropriate instruction plan for students without IEPs
  • Selects materials appropriate to the needs of students with the assistance of the Director, taking into account yearly budget and submitting requests on a Purchase Order
  • Writes weekly lesson plans and reviews them with the Director
  • Maintain emergency lesson plan notebook or substitute folder with specific information on class groupings, content, schedule, rules, etc.
  • Maintains student grades for each subject area and completes quarterly report cards
  • Writes monthly reports that reflect student’s progress towards academic and behavioral goals in the classroom.

Instruction & Classroom Management

  • Manages classroom comprised of Special Education, Mild/Moderate, and General Education students
  • Delivers instruction designed to meet goals and objectives of IEPs ITPs, ETPs, and/or grade level curriculum and treatment plans, consistently incorporating technology into structured lesson plans while utilizing appropriate curricular and classroom modifications and accommodations and in compliance with state SOLs
  • Structures and manages the classroom environment developing a classroom behavioral management program as a supplement to the PDS to promote safety and productivity, teaching students to make decisions and role models appropriate behavior for them
  • Implements behavioral programs as necessitated following/maintaining a student management plan as approved by the multidisciplinary team
  • Reinforces appropriate academic and pro-social behavior
  • Intervenes in escalating behaviors and utilizes de-escalation techniques; demonstrates knowledge of guidelines regarding behavioral interventions (quiet time, restraint, elopement)
  • Provides direction and support for the classroom Instructional Aide and Direct Care Staff in classroom management and activities

Special Education Case Management

  • Independently develops individualized and educationally appropriate goals and objectives for IEPs in all areas. Develops individualized behavior plans and transition plans according to DOE guidelines
  • Completes and documents teacher administered assessments while consistently reassessing for changes in the client's educational status or needs
  • Provides recommendations based upon assessment data. Evaluates academic proficiency and determines appropriate academic curriculum for student based upon assessment data, age, strengths, and special needs

  • Maintains a safe, clean, and neat classroom environment, recognizes potential risks and threats to safety within the therapeutic classroom environment.

Requirements

Education/Experience/Knowledge/Understanding

  • B.A. or B.S. Degree in the Education field from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of two years of related verifiable work experience preferably with children in grades PK-6/K-8
  • Possess a clear Teaching Credential in Special Education from an accredited college
    or university
  • Possess a unrestricted Driver’s License in state of program or states with reciprocity
  • Clear fingerprint background screening through the Department of Justice, FBI and Child Abuse Index; and a pre-employment physical
  • Must be 21 years of age or older

Physical Demands

  • Ability to frequently see, hear, speak, and walk; occasionally sits, stands, bends, lift up to 25 lbs., carry; and at times may stoop, climb, squat, kneel, run, and drive
  • Ability to spend 20% of time outdoors, 80% indoors, withstand moderate noise levels including voice levels 90% of the time, extreme heat up to 118 degrees; wind, rain cold weather; to operate household appliances; to drive an automobile
  • Employees may be exposed to children who may ask inappropriate personal questions, display socially unacceptable personal behaviors, insult your physical appearance, age, sex, and race, use profanity, sexually explicit phrases, exhibit defiance, dishonesty, threats, accusations, and theft, assaultive behaviors and self-destructive behaviors.


Preferences

  • Master’s Degree that is dually certified in both General Education and Special Education
