The Snowcat Mechanic will maintain, repair, and assist in the operation of snowcat and snowcat-related equipment by completing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting malfunctions, and preparing equipment for daily operation in compliance with industry standards.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for maintenance and repair of snowcats, including hydraulic equipment. Following all manufacturers' maintenance manuals.
  • Remove defective parts by dismantling devices, using come alongs, cranes, heavy equipment, rigging, hand and power tools; examining and diagnosing cause of failure and correcting the condition.
  • Perform all summer maintenance required to prep equipment for winter operation.
  • Maintain equipment, parts and supplies inventory and conserve resources by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipate equipment, parts and supplies and use equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Prepare operational and maintenance reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information. Maintain inventory records on repairs made, parts ordered, and parts inventory.
  • Executing scheduled annual, monthly, weekly and daily maintenance on snowcat equipment.
  • Responding to and determining cause of malfunctions in a timely fashion.
  • Perform all tasks associated with inspecting, repairing, and maintaining snowcats and snowcat-related equipment including:

  • Gears, drive belts, electric motors, diesel engines, bearings.
  • Hydraulic and mechanical tension and braking systems.
  • Control systems and batteries.
  • Observe equipment in operation and listen to their sounds to locate causes of trouble. Dismantle devices to gain access to and remove defective parts. Examine form and texture of parts to detect imperfections. Inspect used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements. Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments. Repair or replace defective parts. Install special functional and structural parts in devices. Lubricate and clean parts. Start devices to test their performance.
  • Complete required departmental maintenance log sheets and record keeping.
  • Maintains tools, vehicles and equipment in clean and good working condition.
  • Work closely with the Grooming department and snowcat drivers to take a proactive approach to outline plans for preventative maintenance and responsible operation.
  • Be an active member of the snow removal team by operating loaders and plows for snow removal throughout the winter. If not experienced in this area, training and practice will be provided in order to play a key role in this area.
  • Provide input into fleet management and future snowcat purchasing decisions.
  • Be ready and willing to train on new snowcat technologies, such as hybrid and electric snowcats in order to support Taos’ sustainability and B Corp initiatives. This position has the opportunity to be a leading mechanic with electric and green technology.

Qualifications & Knowledge:

  • 2-3 years of prior experience with snowcat, heavy equipment, hydraulic maintenance or similar equipment.
  • Education requirement of High School Diploma preferred.
  • Must possess valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays and evenings.
  • Knowledge of equipment safety codes and standards.
  • Familiar with a wide variety of engines and equipment.
  • Possession of personal tools and understanding of tool use safety preferred.

Work Environment:
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. TSVI is located in a high-altitude alpine environment. Position may require travel on uneven, snow-packed, or icy terrain and may be exposed to wet, cold and/or humid conditions. Mechanic will be asked to troubleshoot and fix snowcat issues on the mountain in inclement weather and steep terrain.

Physical Demands of Position Include:
80% of the workday is spent in the VMF shop: 20% of the workday is spent outdoors in constantly changing weather conditions, including snow, extreme cold and wet in winter and heat, thunder and lightning storms in summer. 80% of the day is spent standing. Frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds and pushing and pulling objects weighing up to 250 pounds.

Constantly listening to machinery sounds and smelling for gases and odors, near and far acuity, depth perception, color and field of vision. 60% of the time noise levels reach 75 - 110 decibels. Constant exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards, high exposed work site, burns and radiant energy. Frequent exposure to fumes, odors and gases.
