    POSITION TITLE: SKILLED MAINTENANCE-PLUMBER
    DEPARTMENT: MAINTENANCE
    REPORTS TO: MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR

    SUMMARY: Performs skilled plumbing, heating and sprinkler work in the maintenance, repair and renovation of all school facilities and general maintenance work as required.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.
    • Receives oral or written work orders from supervisor.
    • Studies building plans, blueprints, diagrams or drawings to determine equipment, tools and materials required.
    • Estimates time and materials costs and orders material as needed.
    • Assists in estimating major renovation jobs.
    • Maintains all district owned field and building sprinkler systems.
    • Installs, maintains and repairs sewer, water, hot water systems, toilets, showers, piping and associated equipment.
    • Establishes and carries out on a regular basis, a preventative maintenance program for all district plumbing, heating and sprinkler equipment.
    • Inspects equipment, facilities and recommends repair or replacement action to supervisor.
    • Assists in emergency maintenance operations.
    • Reports work accomplished orally and in writing to supervisor.
    • Is available for work beyond regular hours and performs general maintenance work and all other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.
    • Instructs custodians and maintenance workers on proper use of plumbing tools.
    • Maintains safety and code requirements.
    • Performs general maintenance work as needed.
    • Performs ground maintenance work as needed.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Supervises helpers.

    QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: TO PERFORM THIS JOB SUCCESSFULLY, AN INDIVIDUAL MUST BE ABLE TO PERFORM EACH ESSENTIAL DUTY SATISFACTORILY. THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW ARE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND/OR ABILITY REQUIRED. REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS MAY BE MADE TO ENABLE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
    • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.
    • Connecticut P2 and S2 license plus Connecticut Certification to repair and install all back flow controls.
    • Connecticut Motor Vehicle License.
    • Connecticut F2 License desirable.
    • Completion of an approved apprentice program desirable.
    • Five (5) year experience at the journeyman level desirable.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS:
    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups and other employees.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
    Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

    COMPUTER SKILLS:
    Basic knowledge and experience with job related computer hardware and software applications.

    REASONING ABILITY:
    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

    OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education Policies. Working knowledge of public building and structural design. Knowledge of building code conformance.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs onto ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.

    The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds, such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally, the employee will lift heavier items and should do so with assistance. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and will occasionally work outdoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers and sprays. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

    Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain and snow.
