Shelter Care Aide
Type of Position: Part-time, not to exceed 35 hours per week. Hourly compensation, $12.00 to $14.00 per hour, determined by candidate’s education, experience, and any relevant credentials. Sojourners’ Part-time Staff Classification Wage Scale will provide the guide for compensation. No benefits or paid time off.
Positions are dependent upon continued grant funding. In addition, this position is required to provide mental health supportive services to young adults through Sojourners’ partnership with Hopewell Health Centers Inc.
Location: Positions are available at each of the Emergency Shelters operated by Sojourners in the southern Ohio region (Athens, Gallia, Jackson, Ross, and Vinton Counties). Aides typically have a primary assignment at one of the locations but may also have the opportunity for work in the other Sojourners shelters. Primary location for this position is Gallipolis, OH.
General Purpose: Sojourners Shelter Care Aides are responsible for providing support to and ensuring the health and safety of shelter residents ages 16-24 living in Sojourners’ residential shelters.
Work Hours: The work schedule will be assigned by the Aide’s on-site supervisor based on needs of the shelter residents but will not exceed 35 hours per week. Hours will include, on a rotating basis, overnight and weekend hours.
Supervision: The Shelter Care Aide reports directly to Sojourners’ Housing Program Director or RHYA Manager, with day-to-day supervision by the on-site Shelter Care Coordinator.
Job Duties:
Resident Support
- Help to provide a safe and supportive environment for all residents of shelter.
- Be transparent with residents on shelter expectations, their right to individuality, and making their own choices.
- Empower residents to employ positive communication by involving them in resolving shelter disputes/conflicts.
- Participate and manage pre-planned shelter skill development activities for residents.
- Provide/complete orientation process to residents coming into shelter and answer questions regarding Sojourners’ housing support.
- Provide mental health supportive services as identified on residents’ Individualized Services Plans (ISP).
- Assist residents in meeting any basic needs including, when approved, providing transportation support.
- Assist residents to explore and access identified Job Training & Education supports and services.
- Report and document any violations of the Sojourners’ Occupancy Agreement or housing rules.
- Access urgent/emergency support for residents from local emergency services.
- Access the Sojourners on-call team for residential support after hours and during weekends.
- Regularly document mental/behavioral health services provided as well as participant progress.
- Ensure residents are treated in an ethical/non-judgmental manner including adherence to the highest possible level of confidentiality.
- Comply with Ohio’s mandated reporter laws and procedures.
- Maintain appropriate relationship boundaries with residents.
Shelter Operations
- Responsible for the implementation of all Shelter policies and procedures.
- Access resident support after hours and on weekends through the Sojourners On-Call Team.
- In partnership with residents, complete the daily cleaning protocol established by the on-site supervisor.
- Access emergency assistance from local emergency services.
- Document and log shift activities in appropriate online databases.
- Maintain accurate shelter supply inventory to ensure residents can attend to basic needs.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school graduate or equivalent credential is required.
- Computer competency—demonstrated experience in MS Excel, Word, and database programs preferred.
- Travel is required; must have a reliable automobile, a valid driver’s license, current auto insurance coverage, with a clean driving record and be insurable by Sojourners’ insurance agent.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and climb stairs. The employee is occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 45 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include Close vision and Distance vision.
Employment Screening: Employment with Sojourners Care Network is contingent upon successfully passing required background checks and drug screening. Offers of employment are not extended until screening results are received, which may take 2 to 4 weeks.
