SGI Native Seed Program Technician Job at Austin Peay State University
Austin Peay State University’s (APSU) Southeastern Grasslands Institute (SGI) invites applications for two seasonal part-time Native Seed Program Technician positions, funded by an assistance agreement with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The technician will be part of the Native Seed Program team at SGI and will report to the Native Seed Program Director. Specifically, the Technicians will be responsible for helping plan and perform seed collections for the Seeds of Success (SOS) national program, as part of a field crew led by the Native Seed Program Manager; and for assisting with other indoor activities, such as native seed cleaning and processing, small event organization (such as workshops), and plant propagation. The Technician is expected to spend 65% of their time in the field and 35% in indoor facilities to perform the other activities. Some travelling will be expected to reach distant plant populations in the target 10-state region (AL, AR, GA, KY, LA, MS, NC, SC, TN, and VA), with possible overnight stay. Expenses related to travelling, such as transportation, lodging and per diem will be covered through the Program’s funding.
This is a part-time, seasonal position averaging 29 hours/week for 35 weeks (8 months). We are able to offer a housing stipend of $600/month for 8 month. The Technician will be expected to interact and sometimes work closely with other members of SGI, such as the Volunteer Coordinator and the Communication Officer. The work will be performed in-person both in the field and in the indoor facilities. Working from home will be possible for few, specific desk-based tasks. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Help identify potential collection locations of priority species through scouting, analysis of herbarium records, previous SOS collections, and vegetation mapping.
- Help collect 3 herbarium vouchers for each potential collection site. Take appropriate photos as instructed in SOS protocol (https://www.blm.gov/SOS).
- Help monitor phenology of target plant populations to plan and execute collections.
- Help ensure collection of all required population scouting data, seed collection data, and photos are properly recorded. Complete SOS data sheets for each collection.
- Help update and maintain all required population and geospatial data.
- As part of the team, make seed collections using the BLM SOS protocol (https://www.blm.gov/SOS).
- Communicate to all parties clearly, effectively and timely.
- Report in an accurate and timely fashion.
- Help completing in time end-of-season duties, including data entry into SOS Data Portal, and final report.
- Work and assist our volunteers in various activities, such as seed cleaning.
- Help processing seeds (e.g., cleaning, entering data, etc.).
- Help with organization of small events such as training courses and workshops.
- Read relevant materials and protocols.
- Participate in regular Native Seed Program team meetings and occasional SGI staff meetings.
- Able to learn quickly and adapt to challenges.
- Ability to work a non-standard schedule, such as beginning at 5 am, to avoid heat-related issues, or for coordination with team members
- Must be able to work in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings.
- Must be able to hike over rugged terrain and variety of landscapes (wetlands, grasslands, rugged hills, slopes, etc.).
- Must be comfortable visiting natural areas where encounters with wildlife can happen.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend and stoop for long periods of time while identifying species, scouting populations, collecting seed; to use hand tools; and occasionally lift buckets of water and other heavy loads.
- Willingness and ability to work in harsh, ever-changing environmental conditions, including hot temperatures, independently in remote places, or as part of a team.
- Minimum of B.S. or B.A. degree.
- Experience in plant identification is preferred.
- Knowledge of and prior experience in seed collection and processing is preferred.
- Excellent organizational and task-management skills.
- Must be able to work as part of a dynamic team
- Experience hiking.

- Evidence of good character, mature attitude, and professional integrity.
- Experience maintaining accurate and detailed data records.
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate and work effectively with a wide variety of people
- Possession of a valid driver’s license preferred.
