Venice Community Housing (VCH) is a community-based, nonprofit organization engaged in a variety of housing and community development programs. VCH owns and operates 252 units of affordable and supportive housing in 17 properties and operates an additional 28 units of short-term housing in two programs for families and transition-age youth experiencing homelessness. VCH has robust resident services programs including case management and other supportive services for all tenants. Other community development programs include educational programs for young adults and elementary school youth.
The Resident Services Department of VCH provides programs and services that seek to stabilize, engage, and empower all we serve. The Resident Services team does this through various programs and services, which include but are not limited to providing case management services, educational workshops, tenant engagement activities, supportive services resources and referrals, and after-school programming.
The Senior Mental Health Specialist is responsible for providing direct service delivery to VCH residents and program participants and consultation and support to staff in residential and youth programs. The position will report directly to the Director of Resident Services and be part of a shared program management team with the Deputy Director and the Director of Resident Services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • As part of the overall programs management team, help develop, enhance and supervise high-quality delivery of all of VCH’s resident and social service programs and provide leadership for the department
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team to ensure that resident and program participant goals and behavioral management needs are met
  • General oversight of service delivery, consulting regularly with the Director of Resident Services regarding quality control issues to maintain the highest standard of services
  • Assist in the management of program activities, including timely completion of progress notes and other documentation related to the programs
  • Provide assessment, crisis intervention, mental health, and case management services directly to VCH residents and program participants, including some coverage of a 24-hour crisis line
  • Conduct functional and strength-based assessment along with comprehensive diagnosis for mental health, substance abuse, trauma, and psychosocial needs
  • Help develop resident/youth case management plans that are coordinated and integrated with a comprehensive range of medical and psychosocial services to address social, emotional, and practical needs
  • Provide psychotherapy, counseling, and psycho-education utilizing individual, family, and group modalities using evidence-based interventions for residents and program participants
  • Utilize both short-term and intensive longer-term interventions that target trauma, mental health symptoms, and reduction of substance use
  • Provide consultation to and coordinate care for residents needing specialty mental health and/or substance use disorder services
  • Advocate for VCH residents and program participants to ensure access to appropriate care
  • Facilitate and lead case conferences for supportive housing cases and other program participants as necessary
  • Plan, coordinate, and/or participate in professional development activities for all programs teams
  • Support resident/program participant involvement in planning, implementing, and evaluating services
  • Assist with the collection and accuracy of all data necessary to meet all funder requirements, measure program outcomes, and guide future development
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Director of Policy and Programs or identified by the programs management team

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in social work, human services, or a related field; (licensure as an LMFT/LMSW in the state of California preferred)
  • Three to five years experience in providing social services to adults and/or transition-age youth
  • Demonstrated understanding of the impact of trauma on behavioral and medical conditions
  • Knowledgeable of evidence-based treatments (DBT, CBT, Seeking Safety, Motivational Interviewing)
  • Knowledge of principles, procedures, methods, and techniques of mental health emergency procedures such as 5150, CPS reporting, APS reporting, and Tarasoff
  • Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work well with diverse tenants, youth, staff, and partners
  • Valid California Driver’s License and proof of insurance
  • Experience working with substance abuse disorders preferred
  • Experience in supportive and interim housing programs, or other experience with those that have experienced homelessness, preferred
  • Knowledge of Art/ Expressive therapy, kids and family therapy preferred
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, preferred
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Stationary position 70% of the time. Operates a computer and other office machineries such as fax, copy machine, and phone. Occasionally ascends/descends stairs move inside and outside the office, apartments, buildings, etc. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds. Required to have visual acuity to perform the following tasks: operating a motor vehicle, viewing a computer terminal, reading, and writing.
SALARY
A competitive annual salary will be offered, depending on experience and qualifications, plus benefits including medical, dental, vision, life, Aflac, 403 (b), vacation, sick time, 14 holidays, and 2 personal days. This is an exempt position.
