Building Bridges Across the River (Building Bridges) provides residents East of the Anacostia River access to the best-in-class facilities, programs and partnerships in arts and culture, economic opportunity, education, recreation, health and well-being. Building Bridges Across the River (Building Bridges) envisions a future in which the residents East of the Anacostia River experience vital, thriving communities characterized by social, cultural, economic, and racial equity. In order to combat past and current structural inequities, Building Bridges develops and manages facilities and programs in Wards 7and 8 including the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC), THEARC Theater, 11th Street Bridge Park, and Skyland Workforce Center. In 2005, Building Bridges first facility was THEARC at 110,000 square feet and since then, has grown to 203,000 square feet, representing the largest social service, multisector, nonprofit collaboration in the country.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Senior Controller is charged with providing accurate and timely financial reports and analysis. This requires:

  • Managing the monthly financial close process including the recordation of all necessary recurring and adjusting journal entries
  • Completion of all bank and balance sheet account reconciliations for review and approval
  • Preparation of monthly financial reporting package for review and dissemination to executive leadership
  • Production of monthly internal financial budget to actual reports for department leads and executive leadership team.
  • Identifying and explaining material variances between actual expense and budget; reporting significant issues to executive management
  • Present to the finance committee the analysis of monthly financial statements and answer questions.

AREAS OF FOCUS AND KEY TASKS:

  • Maintain Building Bridges and BBDCs chart of accounts.
  • Ensure the timely payment and accurate tracking of required capital loan payments associated with awarded New Market Tax Credit (NMTC)
  • Support Finance team during annual financial audit process. This includes collaborating to perform internal audit testing prior to external audit fieldwork.
  • Implement and manage the annual organizational wide budgeting process and any related intermittent reforecasts.
  • Manage and further develop an orderly accounting filing system based on current Record Retention requirements and policies
  • Actively participate in a continuous improvement loop with the Finance Team to consistently review and monitor Building Bridges internal financial controls and processes.
  • Develop and maintain financial record keeping and reporting systems.
  • Manage payroll, billing, receivables, payables, cash receipts, cash disbursements, and general ledger functions.
  • Complete all bank and balance sheet account reconciliations for Presidents’ approval.
  • Monitor and follows-up on receivables that have been outstanding for unusually long periods of time.
  • Ensure that all general ledger accounts are reconciled to subsidiary records monthly.
  • Review reconciliations to ensure that they are prepared properly and follow-up on any unusual items.
  • Monitor cash flow and investments.
  • Reconcile bank and investment accounts and prepare related journal entries.
  • Oversee preparation of invoices.
  • Oversee filing of tax forms including 1099s.
  • Prepare for annual audit and Form 990 tax return.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance required. CPA preferred.
  • 7+ years of experience in positions relevant to the responsibilities
  • Proficient in Sage Intacct required.
  • Demonstrates project management experience coordinating and prioritizing complicated projects with many moving parts.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff, volunteers, donors, board members and prospective donors.
  • Desire to work with and some knowledge of communities that we serve in Wards 7 and 8 preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a focus on communications around key financial activities and budget to actual variances.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in the use of software (Windows OS, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Strong research and analytical skills. Ability to investigate an issue, ask thoughtful questions and recommend possible solutions. Able to build a logical approach to addressing problems by drawing on own knowledge and experience or by seeking other references or resources as appropriate
  • Able to set short-and long-term planning goals in line with organizational priorities and available resources. A task-oriented style, with a focus on achieving clear and ambitious goals. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization while delivering a high-quality work product. Able to develop and move projects forward with independence and autonomy and maintain attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties

SALARY & BENEFITS
