Summary -

Hands-on role, responsible for the development, implementation, and administration of the organization’s benefits plans and programs, including medical/dental/vision/life insurance, retirement plans, disability programs, flexible spending, vendor management, and wellness and health education initiatives. Develops programs designed to keep employees informed about company benefit plans and any proposed changes. Ensures that programs are current with regard to trends, practices and costs. Negotiates coverage, services and costs with carriers and brokers. Interacts with others in areas, such as the risk management or legal departments, to investigate innovative programs to determine feasibility in terms of cost, risk to the company, and legal implications. Provides thought leadership on benefit programs, including design, enhancements, cost control, wellness, employee engagement, etc.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities -

65% Responsible for the development, implementation, and administration of the organization’s benefits plans and programs. This includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Investigates benefit trends and recommends new and improved benefit programs, design, enhancements, cost control, wellness, employee engagement, etc.

  • Manages and administers group life, health, accident, disability and dental insurance programs.

  • Manages and administers activities of organization's savings and retirement programs.

  • Reviews and responds to escalated claim issues and appeals.

  • Ensures employees are effectively informed and educated on benefit programs and changes.

  • Responsible for planning and administering annual open enrollment.

  • Compiles periodic and special reports on benefits matters for senior management.

25% Manages and acts as liaison between organization and various insurance carriers, plan administrators and vendors. Negotiates coverage, services and costs with carriers and brokers.

10% Remains current on all government regulations involving benefits and savings and retirement including, but not limited to, ERISA, FMLA, ACA, HIPAA, and COBRA.

  • Ensures that the benefits programs are administered in compliance applicable laws and regulations, including filing and preparing required reports.

Prerequisites -

Education: Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business, or equivalent educational field

Experience: 8+ years in Human Resources benefits field, including experience with a variety of health, welfare and retirement plans, including self-funded and fully insured. In-depth knowledge of benefit program compliance including ERISA, FMLA, ACA, HIPAA, COBRA, etc.

Certifications, Licenses, etc: Benefits certification preferred.


Specialized Knowledge and Skills -

Language Skills: Ability to read and write, reports, correspondence, etc. Verbal communication skills.

Mathematical Skills: Skilled in math application.

Reasoning Skills: Must be highly organized, analytical, have strong attention to detail, able to manage multiple priorities effectively and be able to work cooperatively as a team member. Excellent problem solving, prioritization, planning, communication, decision-making, and presentation skills. Requires well developed interpersonal skills to act in the capacity of liaison with all levels of staff, management and external vendors and partners.

Noise: Moderate noise encountered due to overall office environment

Standing/Lifting: Regularly required to sit and occasionally required to stand. Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Visual: Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

Stress: Moderate levels of stress may occur.

Travel: Occasional travel required.

Supervisory Responsibility, if any: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.


The anticipated salary range for this position is $99,000 to $120,000; depending upon the selected candidate’s relevant experience, the exact salary for the role may fall outside of this range. This role will also be eligible to participate in the Company’s bonus/incentive program(s).
