Position summary:
Do you want to help make your community safer for children to walk, roll and bicycle to school? Then you might be a great candidate to create and the Safe Routes to School ("SRTS") program. The Safe Routes to School Program Coordinator is responsible for developing Safe Routes to School efforts to support and lead education and outreach programs in the district’s schools. These local school programs teach and encourage children to use active transportation modes (walking, biking, skating, scootering, etc.) for their travel to school. You should have experience in working independently with a broad range of community and governmental partners, creating, and implementing educational programs, conducting program research, analysis, and evaluation, and assisting with developing policy and strategic direction. A typical workday for this position may include working with external partners (school district leadership and staff, local government jurisdiction staff, parents, and community members) to implement in-school programs, reviewing grant applications or requests for payment to ensure regional goals are being met, or providing technical assistance to partners to support their work of delivering SRTS programs.


Essential Job Duties

  • Conduct analysis and planning to inform development and implementation of the Safe Routes to School Program in partnership with the region's school districts and other community stakeholders
  • Actively work with local schools and school districts to develop partners, collect evaluation data, develop recommendations, and produce and implement an action plan
  • Serve as a liaison between schools/school districts and transportation agencies to share information, participate in decision making processes and ensure coordination of activities and investments
  • Work closely and coordinate with ODOT SRTS non-infrastructure and infrastructure funding program managers, so that both state and regional funding opportunities are used to their greatest potential and best serve the public
  • Manage and facilitate regional SRTS working group, assisting them to coordinate and implement their SRTS activities Serve as an expert resource on SRTS implementation, including:
  • Coordinate with schools and communities on events such as but not limited to International Walk to School Day and Walking School Bus Programs Developing and giving presentations on SRTS implementation topics at meetings and relevant conferences
  • Providing technical assistance via email, telephone, and in person to local communities seeking help on issues with wide-ranging consequences, such as overturning 'no bicycling to school' policies, and responding to questions from the field on starting a SRTS program and implementation of recommendations
  • Create and manage committees for youth to share their thoughts on SRTS implementation, communication, and how to best engage youth leadership
  • Work with partner organizations to promote events and programs as necessary
  • Coordinate within and outside the district’s on SRTS-related infrastructure projects as required
  • Assist with management of grants to SRTS partners.


Minimum Requirements

  • At least two years of professional experience working with community groups and governments, program development and analysis and Experience tailoring educational programs to public groups including diverse, culturally specific or underserved communities and Bachelor's degree in planning, education, community development, public affairs or related field Or any combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.
  • Valid driver's license Demonstrated interest and/or experience with transportation (preferred) Knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Experience with Safe Routes to School programs, school systems, or educational systems a plus
  • Experience and skill in public speaking and presentations
  • Experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with multiple stakeholders to facilitate partnerships
  • Experience in leading standing committees or other working groups Skill in verbal communication, including public speaking Skill in time management, organization and problem-solving
  • Ability to liaise between administrative and technical staff, contractors, consultants, and the public to provide and gather information and data
  • Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and set up and break down tables, tents, banners, and other event equipment
  • Self-motivated, creative, detail-oriented, and energetic
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to speak Spanish is a plus
  • Ability to be organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to use a variety of computer software applications, especially web browsers, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Any offer of employment made by North Wasco County School District is contingent upon satisfactory results of:
