The Respite Care Worker is responsible for providing temporary care to a Waiver child in order to provide a parent/caregiver with a needed break so as to ease the stress at home and improve family harmony.

Essential Functions:

  • Planned Respite:
    • Provide short-term relief for the child or family/primary caregivers that are needed to enhance the family/primary caregiver’s ability to support the child/youth’s functional, developmental, behavioral health, and/or health care needs.
    • Planned Respite activities support the plan of care goals and include providing supervision and activities that match the child/youth’s developmental stage and continue to maintain the child/youth’s health and safety.
  • Crisis Respite:
    • Provide an intervention strategy for children/youth and their families that help to alleviate the risk for an escalation of symptoms, a loss of functioning, and/or a disruption in a stable living environment.
  • Note: Crisis Respite can be used when a child/youth is displaying a challenging behavior or situational crises where the family/caregiver is unable to manage without intensive assistance and support.
    • Ongoing communication between the child/youth and/or the family/primary caregiver is required to assure collaboration and continuity in managing the crisis salutations and identifying subsequent support and service needs.
  • Development and updating of service plans, including obtaining medical consenter signatures.
  • Obtaining consents and enrollment documents for newly enrolled children/youth.
  • Attend monthly waiver service provider meetings to stay current on practices and protocols.
  • Submit progress notes, service plans, expense logs, and service provider logs within set forthrequired timeframes.
  • Report incident(s) to supervisor upon discovery.
  • Maintain open communication with other service providers (e.g., Care Manager) to report on child/youth’s progress and identify any potential barriers and referrals.
  • Submit progress notes, service plans, expense logs, and service provider logs within set forthrequired timeframes. Progress notes are due within 3 days of service provision so that approval from supervisor is completed by the 5th business day following service provision.
  • Setting of Service Provision:
    • Planned/Crisis Respite can be provided in the home of the youth or a community setting.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalency.
  • 1 year of experience working or volunteering with children with special needs and their families.
  • Ability to work amongst diverse social, cultural, and economic groups.
  • Good written, verbal, and listening skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and have some knowledge with using Electronic Health Records (EHR).
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Bilingual in one or more of the following: Bengali, Urdu, Spanish and others, may be required depending on client needs
