The Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments (NECCOG) has an immediate job opening for a Regional Planner with excellent communication, collaboration, and project management skills to join our Regional Planning and Transportation team. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the most innovative COGs in Connecticut in the development, advocation and application of regionalism. NECCOG’s strength is having in place the staffing expertise to assist towns that individually would not be able to either afford or justify. Our planners work on a range of planning activities including: economic planning, land use planning, housing planning, environmental planning, transportation planning, municipal administration and much more. This provides our planners with an exceptional opportunity to work in all aspects of regional planning. The Region: The region, served by NECCOG, forms the northeastern corner of Connecticut and includes 16 of the state’s 169 towns (Connecticut has no functioning counties). The region is home to a range of natural and historic New England landscapes, making it quintessential New England. The area is characterized by rolling hills, forests, classic New England villages, former mill towns and farms. Geographically the region is large, encompassing just over 10% of Connecticut’s total area or 562.8 square miles. However, the population is just over 95,000 residents. While the region is rural, it well situated in terms of proximity to New Englands three largest cities: Boston (90 minutes), Worcester (30 minutes) and Providence (30 minutes). Cape Cod is less than two hours away and numerous ski areas in New England are a simple day trip. Northeastern Connecticut provides numerous state parks, including the Air Line Trail State Park, for hiking and biking. Duties include: Assists in the development of town and regional plans; gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports, and recommendations; coordinates with other agencies as needed; may provide part-time on-site staffing at local municipal offices located throughout the region; Skills: This position requires strong project management skills, solid writing skills, proven analytical and organizational skills; effective verbal communications, and close coordination and working relationships with local, regional, and state agencies and organizations. Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree (Masters preferred) from an accredited college or university in Urban or Regional Planning, with demonstrated coursework in the principles of land use planning or land use policy, or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience in a professional position that involved work functions related to land use planning. Compensation: Compensation will include salary and benefits. Salary will be in the mid $55K to mid $60K. Benefits include health insurance, retirement plan, paid vacation and sick leave.
