The Rangemaster provides instruction in pistol and rifle firing, firearms safety, and related procedures. This position also conducts fireman qualifications and oversees the Sheriff's Department firing range and firearms storage room.
Examples of Duties
Schedules use of the range for training and qualifications for the Sheriff's Office as well as other law enforcement agencies.
Ensures range is operating in accordance with company policies during all business hours.
Ensures safety on the range by observing all users and respectfully, but immediately ceasing any behavior that could be considered unsafe.
Assists all users of the range with reasonable requests for help/guidance.
Develops lesson plans and training sessions for firearms.
Conducts firearm training and delivers safety and other lectures to Sheriff personnel and members of outside organizations or groups. Training classes including Basic Firearms, Advanced Firearms, Patrol Rifle, Firearms Instructor, Honor Guard Rifle, M-14 Rifle and specialty weapons for Animal Control.
Keeps documentation of classes conducted and prepares report as needed.
Manages and conducts firearm qualifications, including coordinating firearms instructors within the Sheriff's Office.
Conducts biannual inspections of all firearms carried by Sheriff's Office personnel; makes repairs when necessary.
Determines when seized weapons should be entered into the Sheriff's inventory or marked for a court order to destruct.
Inventories items stored and issued and maintains storeroom records.
Performs firing range maintenance duties which include maintaining targets, range equipment, range facility, etc.
Oversees trustees assisting in range maintenance or other duties.
Conducts and maintains firearms and ammunition inventories.
Performs research for ammunition selection. Makes recommendations for purchases. Receives items and checks for proper quantity and description.
Tracks ammunition use by department personnel and inspects and maintains quality control standards for ammunition used at the range.
Regular and punctual attendance is required.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED and a minimum four years of experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
Must attain certification by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement as a Jailer within six months (6) of employment.

Possession of a valid driver's license. Must be able to obtain a State of Texas driver's license within 90 days.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Required certifications: Peace Officer License, Basic Police Instructor Proficiency, and Firearms Instructor Proficiency.
Preferred certifications: Advanced Instructor Proficiency, Armorer's Certification from the federal facility in Anniston Alabama, and Armorer's certification from major manufacturers of firearms.
