The Associated Students of CSU, Chico is recruiting for Adventure Outings Program Coordinator . This is a full-time, full year (2080 hours), non-exempt position. The starting range is $22.00 - $26.85/hr ; placement in range is dependent upon experience with new hires typically starting at the base of the range. The anticipated schedule for this position is typically Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, with occasional nights and weekends. This schedule is subject to change based on operational needs.

The Associated Students (AS) is a comprehensive campus auxiliary corporation of CSU,Chico serving thousands of students, faculty, staff and community members through myriad student programs, services and business enterprises. With an annual budget of more than $21M, the AS operates residential and retail dining services, the Bell Memorial Union, the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC), and administers the contract for the Wildcat Store (bookstore). Additionally, the AS offers a wide variety of services and programs such as: CAVE (Community Action Volunteers in Education), Child Development Lab, Adventure Outings, Recycling, Sustainability and student government. Typically, the AS employs more than 100 full and part-time employees and more than 750 students.

Adventure Outings

SUMMARY

Under direct supervision to assist with the development and implementation of the Adventure Outings program for the Associated Students including: planning, scheduling and monitoring a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities; hire, train, and supervise student staff; and to do related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Develop and supervise the trips program including program manuals, policies, and staff
  • Coordinate workshops, courses, and events
  • Manage the staffing, logistics, training, marketing, and all other associated aspects of Wildcat Wilderness Orientation, an extensive multi-day wilderness orientation program for incoming students
  • Design and implement custom adventure trips for groups
  • Manage rental program and maintenance for AO’s backcountry yurt
  • Hire, train, and supervise equipment rental center staff
  • Hire, train, and supervise student managers (equipment rental, trips, office)
  • Maintain annual use permits with land management agencies
  • Oversee the creation, design, and printing of a semesterly program calendar
  • Confirm staffing, vehicles, and facility reservations related to trips and special events
  • Organize and lead field training seminars
  • Maintain and oversee Adventure Outings’ online registration system
  • Maintain filing systems for participant records, financial data, and personnel files
  • Orchestrate basic vehicle maintenance, service, and annual inspections
  • Train staff in driving vans and towing trailers and maintain regular driver’s reviews
  • Lead staff trainings, trips, and events as needed
  • Assist in writing grant applications, program manuals, policies and procedures
  • Assist in the general administration of Adventure Outings
  • Assist in annual program assessment and safety review
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring publicity and marketing
  • Facilitate awareness of legal, liability, and safety issues for activities
  • Maintain professional relations with a variety of regulatory agencies
  • Represent the Adventure Outings programming and activities in contacts with the campus community, the public, and other organizations
  • Other duties may be assigned

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Primary work is performed in an office. Occasional work performed outdoors with exposure to wide variations in temperature and weather conditions; continuous contact with staff, campus community, and public.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Stand, sit, and walk for extended periods; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; verbal communication; extensive physical exercise and exertion during outdoor activities requiring cardiovascular strength; operation of motor vehicles.   • Principles, practices, and procedures of varied indoor and outdoor recreational activities and programs
  • Budget planning, development and management
  • Computer systems and software applications related to office management and program registrations
  • Hard and soft skill competencies in program activities such as rock climbing, mountaineering, whitewater rafting, kayaking, backpacking and backcountry skiing
  • Cultural, social, recreational, educational and service objectives and needs of a University community
  • Risk management practices and procedures
  • Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation
  • Repair, maintenance, and assessment of outdoor recreation equipment

Ability to :

  • Plan, develop, and implement Adventure Outings programs and services to meet the needs of the campus community
  • Recruit, hire, supervise, train, and evaluate staff for all Adventure Outings activities and functions
  • Analyze Adventure Outings programs, develop methods to achieve goals
  • Ensure that Adventure Outings programs and events meet the needs of the campus community
  • Organize data, maintain records, and prepare reports
  • Manage equipment inventory and make purchases
  • Develop and maintain professional working relationships with the campus community, general public, co-workers, and those contacted during the course of work
  • Work well under pressure: meeting multiple and sometimes competing deadlines
  • Demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors at all time

Experience :

  • Two (2) years of full-time experience is required. Graduate assistant experience may substitute for full-time experience.
  • Specific experience in coordinating and programming outdoor recreation for a campus population and familiarity with office and rental center operations preferred
  • Experience with other outdoor programs preferred

Education :

  • Bachelor's degree is required.

Special Requirements :

  • Possession of or ability to obtain a current and valid California driver’s license with Passenger Endorsement within 3 months of hire.
  • Possession of an acceptable driving record.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain Wilderness First Responder and CPR certifications within 3 months of hire.
  • Industry certifications with ACA, AMGA, PCIA, or similar are also preferred.
  • Full vaccination status against COVID-19 or an approved medical or religious exemption per Associated Students policy.
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Associated Students will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals any disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
