Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Engineering Division has an opening for a Post Baccalaureate Fellow to join the team.


In this exciting role, you will observe, learn and become familiar with research activities with the goal of increasing the efficiency of bolometric sensor experiments. The incumbent will work with experienced LBNL staff to investigate active noise attenuation using digital post-processing of the collected data together with data from auxiliary devices (such as antennas, accelerometers, microphones, etc).


What You Will Do:

  • Observe and learn experiment setup and operation, data taking, data analysis, and running simulations to verify and better understand the experiments.
  • Observe and learn from research on upgrading and/or developing experiment control, data acquisition and data analysis programs using Python and/or MATLAB.
  • Attend regular group meetings and discussions.
  • Adhere to Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) policies and attend training classes as required.
  • Follow LBL's safety regulations and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Become familiar with the relevant concepts and procedures through reading/searching the literature, discussions with scientists, seminars, and comparisons with a variety of
  • specifications.
  • Become familiar with the process for preparing reports, manuscripts and other documentation as needed for publication and/or for presentation at seminars and scientific conferences.

What is Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) in physics or related field within the last two (2) years. Minimum GPA of 3.2 out of 4.0 to qualify.
  • An official transcript from an accredited university, a statement of career goals and interests, and two references.
  • Ability to accurately record data and perform data analysis.
  • Familiarity with Python or MATLAB for data analysis and hardware control.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Experience with sensors and signal processing concepts.
  • Good understanding of nuclear physics.
  • Experience with electronics hardware and experimental apparatus in a laboratory environment.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time 1 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
