Definition & Essential Functions
The Leader I works directly with adults with disabilities to provide safe leisure opportunities, provides support as needed by the participant during leisure activities. Reports directly to the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator, assists the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator in the planning and execution of age-appropriate activities and events for program participants. Leaders are responsible for submission of attendance, participant progress, incident and unusual incident reports to the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator. Maintains open lines of communication with program participant and their families to ensure that needs are being met. The Leader I is responsible for the smooth operation of the program. The Leader I provides guidance and directions to Recreation Aides.

Tasks
- Responsible for maintaining attendance, tracking and progress reports.
- Responsible for administering a general program of recreation at an recreation center or other facility and in the community.
- Responsible for the stimulation of interest and directions of a variety of competitive and noncompetitive recreation activities.
- Responsible of the supervision and instruction of Recreation Aides assigned to assist in the conduct of recreation activities.
- Assists the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator in making recommendation in regard to the community wide recreation program, or assists in the study of development or development of community interest and support in the recreation program.
- Assists the Therapeutic Recreation Coordinator in developing teaching strategies.
Knowledges, Skills & Other Characteristics
Knowledge of:
- Prevention and Support.
- CPR/First Aide.
- Leadership techniques and methodology.
- Organizing groups of all sizes and leading them in recreational or leisure activities.
Skills in:
- Working with others, programming, planning and organizing recreational activities
Ability to:
- Address personal hygiene needs of participants.
- Take and follow directions from Recreation Coordinators and above
- Ability to assist in the implementation of teaching strategies and behavior treatment plans.
- Work with the general public and fellow employees.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Applicants must be age eighteen (18) years or older.
Must possess a valid driver's license.
