Position Summary:
The Robert W. Van Houten Library at NJIT is looking for a reliable Part-time Library Assistant to work the closing schedule and provide customer service as well as handle basic circulation duties. This position reports to the Director of Circulation and Interlibrary Loan and consists of 12 hours per week for weekday evenings and up to 28 hours weekly
during final exam period. Work Schedule: September to May, typically 12 hours per week from 11:00 pm to 2:00 am, Monday to Thursday. Up to 28 hours weekly during final exams.

Essential Functions:
  • Works closing schedule. Closes and secures the library.
  • Handles routine library circulation tasks such as check-ins, checkout, renewals, and group study room assignment, answers phone, shelving and keeping shelves in order, pickups, arrangement of library furniture, plus other circulation duties.
  • Provides friendly and courteous assistance to customers in person, by phone, or email.
  • Assists patrons with basic directional questions, and locating library materials as needed.
  • Works cooperatively with other library staff.
  • Scheduled hours vary with some weekend hours.

Prerequisite Qualifications:
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Punctuality, reliability, excellent attendance required.
  • Able to work flexible schedule some weekends required.
  • HS Diploma or GED required.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Some computer skills and clerical experience.
  • Must be able to lift (up to 50 pounds) and bend.
  • Good judgment and initiative.
  • Detail oriented, accurate.
  • Team player and work cooperatively with coworkers.
  • Able to work independently.
  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate degree preferred.
