Part-Time Cook/Food Transporter Job at Step Up Suncoast, Inc.
Position Summary/Objective:
Cooks, prepares and when needed assists in delivery of meals to Rise and Shine Early Learning Centers throughout Manatee County.
Essential Functions: (Duties and Responsibilities)
- Assembles food, dishes, utensils and supplies needed for timely meal preparation.
- Prepares high-quality nutritional food, based upon approved meal plan.
- Prepares and sorts food for meal preparation at outlying sites.
- Adheres to sanitation and safety procedures according to local, state and federal regulations.
- Assures that food temperatures are hot or cold enough and kitchen areas are sanitary in accordance with health standards.
- Washes dishes, pots, pans and utensils using approved sanitation methods.
- Returns all items to their proper storage site.
- Completes routine maintenance of kitchen and equipment, including weekly deep cleaning.
- Assists in the maintenance of work-site to comply with local, state and federal regulations in accordance with USDA food program standards and performance standards.
- Assists in the delivery of meals from central kitchen to site kitchens as assigned.
- Assists in ordering and picking up supplies as needed.
- Assists in receiving orders from vendors, insuring that proper items have been delivered.
- Assists with menu planning.
- Assists with food inventories monthly.
- Reconciles container inventory weekly.
- Performs weekly a thorough visual safety check and completes checklist.
- Keeps interiors of vehicles clean daily and exteriors as needed.
- Reports any needed repairs and delivers van to designated repair site as directed.
- Records mileage and gas daily.
Participates in all required training, on-going education to meet Step Up Suncoast policies and procedures, state and federal requirements.
- Performs other duties as requested
Education and Experience Requirements:
- GED or High School diploma and at least one year of commercial kitchen experience.
Training Requirements:
- In–service trainings held throughout the year.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Strong knowledge of large-scale food production, typically from one year relevant experience or education.
- Working knowledge of sanitation and safety procedures prescribed for large scale kitchen production.
- Working knowledge of inventory systems.
- Ability to problem solve and respond appropriately to the unexpected (staff shortages, equipment malfunctions etc.) while maintaining strict meal schedules.
- Knowledge of quantity food preparation and equipment.
- Knowledge of approved sanitation methods.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to apply common sense and understanding written or oral instructions.
- Frequent decisions to assure compliance with performance standards.
Licenses/Certificates/Screenings:
- Must have a valid Florida Driver’s License.
- Must have reliable transportation for work related travel, including nights and out of town.
- Must be insurable under Step Up Suncoast’s organizational policies.
- Pre-employment drug screening required.
- Must pass a Level II criminal background check.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
- High level of daily repetitive motion with hands and arms in food preparation and delivery activities.
- Continuous standing and walking for most of a 7 to 8 hour work day.
- Daily driving of agency vehicles for food delivery when assigned to delivery routes.
- Frequent daily bending and lifting of bulk foods, food bins and hot food caddies: bulk food items are lifted from the floor and weigh 10-50 lbs. each, food bins weigh 30-70 lbs., and are lifted from floor and worktables and loaded on and off vehicles for delivery.
- Regular crouching occurs to retrieve items from lower shelves.
- Regular reaching occurs to retrieve utensils and food items from storage shelves and cupboards up to 8' high and from van beds.
Work environment:
- Work site will include a variety of settings based on work responsibilities including kitchen, classrooms, and other settings as needed to perform work responsibilities.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
Expected hours of work:
- Hours of work and days are typically Monday through Friday with hours varying between, 5:00 am to 1:00 pm (7 hours per day). Part-time employees will have varied hours. Employee may be called upon outside these hours to complete other functions of the position or agency as needed.
Travel:
- Local travel to other site locations and other agency meetings/trainings.
