JOB DESCRIPTION

Position: Orthoptist
Department: Ophthalmology
Schedule: Full Time

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the ophthalmologist, assists in the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders by performing specialized eye tests to measure and assess defective binocular vision or abnormal eye movement in patients. Performs various diagnostic tests to assess patient's vision and interprets results to suggest a treatment plan.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Performs various basic and specialized eye tests. Measures and assesses visual acuity, and binocular function.
Evaluates disorders of the eyes which prevent normal vision such as strabismus (crossed eye) and amblyopia (lazy eye) through observation and by the use of specialized equipment.
Under the general supervision of the ophthalmologist, formulates a treatment plan upon completion of diagnosis, which might involve referral for surgery, glasses, exercises, and/or patching.
Offers continuity of care to patients, monitoring treatment outcomes. Modifies or discontinues treatment as necessary and communicates recommendations to physicians and other providers.
Establishes and maintains professional relationships with patients and families. Explains examination procedures and results and provides instruction on prescribed treatment programs. Provides full instructions to patients about the diagnosis and treatment program suggested.
Works with a variety of patients ranging from newborn to the elderly; shows empathy and understanding to families and patients and explains eye exercises clearly, especially to children. Identifies patients'/families' specific needs and incorporates into patient care as appropriate.
Documents the diagnoses and treatment recommendations in medical chart.
Serves as member of multidisciplinary team to plan and implement patient care and communicate patient needs and recommendations. Liaisons with occupational therapists, physiotherapists and nursing staff, as needed.
Participates in clinical research.
Provides clinical expertise and instruction to medical students, residents and fellows in Ophthalmology.
Performs general administrative duties relative to patient care.
Helps to organize and maintain pediatric supplies for the department.
Keeps up to date with current practices as part of continuing professional development.
Maintains Orthoptic certification by attending continuing education courses and orthoptic meetings.
Adheres to department and hospital protocols, including the following:
Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.
Utilizes hospital’s behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital’s mission and goals.
Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

Other duties as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in Orthoptics is required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

  • Orthoptist certification by the American Orthoptic Council or Canadian Orthoptic Counsil.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have completed two year internship.
  • Experience with pediatric groups and/or visual rehabilitation which includes stroke patients, visually impaired patients and head injury patients preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of ophthalmic diagnostic and orthoptic techniques is required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to explain procedures to patients; and to interact effectively with a variety of Medical Center staff and outside personnel.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively prioritize work assignments.
  • Must have the ability to problem solve issues when resources are stretched and to make alternative plans as needed
  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written).
  • Bilingual or multi-lingual skills (beyond that of English) appropriate to the patient population served is a plus.
  • Proficient with standard Microsoft programs (i.e. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and web browsers.
