ABOUT THE U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY PREPARATORY SCHOOL:
The Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), located within the confines of Naval Station Newport in Newport, RI, is a critical component of the United States Naval Academy (USNA) where we enhance midshipmen candidates' moral, mental, and physical foundations to prepare them for admission to, and success at USNA.
NAPS is a ten-month post-secondary preparatory school, emphasizing preparation in mathematics, chemistry, English Composition, physics, and Information Technology. The students have diverse backgrounds, coming from high schools across the United States and its territories or they may be prior enlisted members of the Navy and Marine Corps. The NAPS student body (the Battalion) is selected from applicants to USNA, with each candidate being required to complete the NAPS program before being admitted as a student at USNA.
The Naval Academy has produced noted leaders, and its graduates (many of whom began their journey at NAPS) have excelled in every walk of life. As an historic officer accession program and premier undergraduate university, USNA has a unique place amongst American educational institutions. Our talented civilian faculty and staff are united by one common purpose - to develop the next generation of leaders for our naval service. Those selected for employment at NAPS are tasked with ensuring a select group of candidates are best prepared to enter the Naval Academy. POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Naval Academy Preparatory School Academic Department invites applications for the English Supervisory Instructor position to be filled as early as Spring 2023. The position is located at the Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) in Newport, RI where the overall mission is to qualify selected candidates for admission to the U.S. Naval Academy.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate Classroom Effectiveness – Serve as an exemplary classroom instructor. Establish and maintain a positive classroom environment; engage students in intellectual effort, motivate individuals – in positive ways – to excel, provide context for and stimulate interest in the subject, facilitate learning with enforcement of rules, and openness to questioning. Prepare and provide clear instruction while adapting pace and depth to maximize learning.
- Provide Supervision of Division Personnel – Supervise, delegate assignments, observe, provide feedback, motivate, evaluate, develop, and correct as necessary, assigned instructors and tutors. Balance of focus among the critical elements is directed by the supervisor. Meet administrative tasks in a professional fashion, to include documenting performance. Serve on the academic leadership team. Support EEO program policies and objectives.
- Maintain Curriculum Vitality – Guide maintenance of the curriculum. Levels of difficulty challenge well prepared students and provide success experiences for all. Assessment is essential but must be accomplished with minimal disruption.
- Support School-wide Mission – Provide leadership for curricular and support extracurricular activities as assigned. Participate in suitable professional development. Reinforce student development across all three pillars.
This is a federal excepted service position. Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum:
- Master’s degree in English or a related field
- At least 5 years teaching or educational administrative experience
- High degree of computer literacy
Preferred:
- Budget management experience
- Database and excel proficiency
- Teaching or administrative experience in Higher Education
- Ability to develop and guide the creation of curricula and instructional aides
- Ability to serve as a role model and leader for instructors and prospective Midshipmen
- Ability and willingness to take initiative and to work with skill and judgment
- Ability to develop other teachers
- Experience teaching students from diverse backgrounds
