Job Title: Museum Educator Jack Hadley Black History Museum

Job Summary: The Museum Educator is responsible for delivering museum programs according to the museum’s Education Plan. This position is solely responsible for creating and presenting a prepared curriculum based on the museum’s collection.

Must be adept at using social media to reach various audiences. Help create a space for growth, education, and inspiration. Salary range: $32,000 - $36,000.00.

Essential Duties:

This is a full-time position; the Educator works Tuesdays- Saturdays with occasional evening work on and or off-site. Travel to professional conferences will occur at the discretion of the Executive Director.

Responsibilities:

  • Create engaging and educational programs for visitors of all ages, socioeconomic backgrounds, and abilities;
  • Deliver educational material in all formats, lectures, family events, public programs, and museum tours;
  • Develop and deliver public programs following the museum’s Education Plan that fulfills its mission;
  • Conduct virtual and/or in-person (preferred) outreach, specifically, travel to schools, community centers, and churches for presentations;
  • Promote the museum to the public using social media, print materials, and other methods;
  • Train museum volunteers/docents to deliver tours based on the Educational

Plan, training manual, and best practices;

  • Research and expand personal knowledge of curriculum materials and state standards;
  • Maintain and store outreach materials between presentations;
  • Support overall museum operations by cooperating with Education staff colleagues and by providing professional assistance to other departments;
  • Meet monthly with the Board;
  • Document program evaluations and make recommendations for improvements promptly; and
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Museum Studies preferred; however, degrees in

Education, History, Anthropology, or a related field are acceptable; Experience in museum or historical site education and community relations is preferred; Excellent oral and written communication skills and comfort with technology are required;

Knowledge of regional and African American history is a plus.

Experience: Three years of work experience preferred which may include one year of internships, undergraduate work, or graduate assistantships. Experience working with

Black History Museums is preferred.

Required Job Knowledge and skills:

  • Cultural sensitivity to work with people of different backgrounds, races, creeds, and cultures;
  • Cultural knowledge of African American history
  • Prior presentation experience in schools or informal learning environments - preferred;
  • Excellent public speaking skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills;
  • Ability to develop projects independently;
  • Curiosity and a love for learning;
  • Ability to adjust to changing situations with ease;
  • Ability to commit to a flexible work schedule, including occasional nights and weekends;

Working Conditions & Physical Tasks:

  • Must have the ability to communicate by voice via telephone, read and understand English, and generate written communication manually and using a computer.
  • Ability to lift and carry 25+ lbs., stand on one’s feet for extended periods, arrange classroom furniture (tables, chairs, desks), climb on ladders; and
  • Must pass a background check;
  • Must have the ability to perform physical tasks, including hanging art, climbing a ladder, unpacking crates, etc.
  • A valid driver’s license and personal vehicle access are required.

  • The salary for this position is commensurate with experience, knowledge, and education.

Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director. Continued employment remains on an “at-will” basis.
