Job Description Summary:
The Medical Research Writer will be responsible for coordinating all publications for the Department of Surgery faculty, residents, and staff. This position will provide medical writing support to faculty, residents and staff and assist with the development of ideas and clinical topics related to surgery for grants, publications, and presentations. Tasks include retrieving and summarizing data and information from literature searches and research studies; preparation of grants, manuscripts, and all other scientific presentation materials ( - presentations, posters, abstracts); as well as the development and implementation of scientific and grant writing training for faculty, residents and staff.
Job Description:
Supervise collaborative teams of Surgery faculty and residents to develop conference materials (abstracts, posters, presentations), and peer-reviewed publications.
Write, review, and edit scientific manuscripts, clinical study reports, plan outlines, investigator brochures, posters, newsletters, book chapters, articles, and other clinical and documents, publications and presentations.
Manage the department's research publications by coordinating various contributors, authors, editors, and researchers. Develop and communicate timelines, tasks, priorities, and schedules to all contributors, authors, editors, and researchers.
Responsible for planning, conducting and reporting literature searches (systematic and non-systematic), screening of abstracts and articles, data extraction and quality assessment for the department.
Interpret non-clinical and clinical data in the preparation of reports and manuscripts intended for publication in peer-reviewed journals. Includes assisting in the development of graphics or other communication materials and reviewing/editing analysis plans prepared by statisticians.
Use various critical appraisal tools for different types of studies/publications. Ensure documents are formatted according to submission specifications for journals or granting agencies. Work with authors to fact-check; clarify text; and prepare figures, tables, charts, legends, slides, and posters.
Attend meetings, participate in committees, and obtain training related to research projects and medical writing.
Work with division leadership to set goals and initiate and implement scientific and grant writing training for faculty, residents, and staff.
Other duties as assigned by the Chair of Surgery or the Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Surgery.
** Required Qualifications **
MA or MS graduate degree in a scientific field, journalism, English, or communications.
Science or medical-related writing experience.
Experience performing literature searches and writing activities, such as writing technical sections of regulatory documents, clinical reports, poster presentations, and/or manuscripts for publication in scientific journals.
Attention to factual detail and accuracy and the ability to see relationships between ideas in order to organize complex information.
Excellent written, editorial, oral and presentation skills.
Experience with Microsoft Office, including presentation development in PowerPoint, and citation management program(s) such as Endnote.
** Preferred Qualifications **
Knowledge and experience with medical terminology preferred.
Familiarity with various clinical research activities and best practices including research study design, protocol development, data analysis, and regulatory requirements.
