What to Expect

As a manufacturing engineer on the Power Electronics and Energy Products Manufacturing Engineering team, you have the important role of developing high quality and efficient manufacturing equipment and processes that will produce our cutting-edge power electronics that drive our cars and energy products. You will work closely with the cross-functional teams throughout the entire lifecycle to provide feedback that will result in a manufacturable product that is robust and will contribute to Tesla’s mission of accelerating sustainability.

What You’ll Do
  • Be liaison between Mechanical and Electrical design engineering and Manufacturing Engineering
  • Program various SMT equipment (paste printer, pick and place, reflow oven, automated inspection (AOI and AXI) and testing (flying probe)) for new boards
  • Conduct exploratory studies and analysis to identify PCB assembly processes to meet product requirements (SMD, through hole, and other special interconnections)
  • Identify critical process parameters and quality attributes, and conduct experiments using Design of Experiments (DOE) methods to determine sensitivity and acceptable process windows
  • Perform stencil design/solder printing and component placement optimizations.
  • Setup a thermal profile to obtain reliable solder joints for specific designs and solder alloys
  • Develop rework processes for PCBAs – adhesives, underfill and encapsulation dispensing recipes based on product requirements
  • Develop cause and effect analysis, Process Failure Mode Effects Analysis (PFMEA) and control plans
  • Troubleshoot and identify corrective measures to critical equipment (mechanical, electrical, thermal, optical etc.) related problems
  • Generate and analyze reports for yield and throughput improvements
What You’ll Bring
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in PCBA manufacturing/process environment
  • Deep knowledge of industry standards for PCBA – IPC610, JEDEC J-STD-001 and Test Methods
  • Proficient in PCBA optical metrology inspections - prior experience in Keyence, Cognex, Viscom, Kohyoung, Omron a plus
  • Solid knowledge of PCBA drawings and schematics (mainly for flying probe)
  • Experience developing and taking new automated manufacturing processes and equipment from the prototype stage through high volume production.
  • Detail oriented with strong record-keeping and organizational skills
  • BS/MS/PhD in Chemical/Physics/Material/Electrical/Industrial/Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience)
