Manager, Outreach - Kentucky Climate Center Job at Western Kentucky University
The Kentucky Climate Center at Western Kentucky University is seeking applicants for the position of Outreach Manager. The workload will include targeted outreach for the Kentucky Climate Center and for the Kentucky Mesonet, a research-grade weather and climate monitoring network that supports public safety and economic development across the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Outreach will be conducted through social media, print, and video with specific opportunities for engagement with K-12 schools, colleges and universities; statewide television, paper, and radio media; local county emergency management; and agriculture extension offices. The goal of the position is to increase awareness across Kentucky of the availability of real-time and historical weather data, and particularly Kentucky Mesonet weather and climate data and derived products, for use in daily personal, business, and educational activities. This position will include some in-state travel (< 25%).
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
- Daily engagement with partners through social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) featuring weather data, site photos, trivia, etc.
- Regular engagement with statewide TV, radio, print media
- Development of a quarterly newsletter for Mesonet partners, and site hosts in particular
- Development of outreach programs and continuing engagement for specific sectors (e.g., education, emergency management)
- Development of Mesonet educational videos
- Contribute to the development of data analysis and products that enhance outreach
- Contribute to miscellaneous outreach and educational activities, as needed.
Knowledge and Skills Considered Essential for Success:
- Knowledge of meteorological instrumentation and equipment for automated environmental monitoring
- Knowledge and skills involving data analysis and visualization
- History of successful engagement on social media
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Scientific and technical writing skills
- Interpersonal communication and public speaking skills
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in meteorology, atmospheric sciences, environmental sciences, or related discipline
- Experience in weather communication in social media, television, radio, and/or print media
- Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
- Strong organization skills and attention to detail is a must.
Additional Information:
Salary Range: $47,000-$55,000
