Maintenance Custodian Job at Dawson County
Position Summary: The Maintenance Custodian is responsible for the performance of general maintenance and custodial work for keeping the Dawson County Sheriff's Department and Courthouse in an orderly, sanitary, and attractive condition.
Essential Job Functions
- Sweep, strip wax, mop, wax, and buff the floors as well as vacuum and shampoo carpets.
- Clean walls, woodwork, windows, glass, blinds, water fountains, restrooms and replenish supplies (i.e. soap, tissues, etc.)
- Polish brass, chrome, metal, and wood paneling and dust/polish/move furniture.
- Perform upkeep of the Dawson County Courthouse grounds such as cut grass, pull weeds, rake leaves, water lawn and flowers, trim hedges, pick up trash and litter, and empty outdoor cigarette disposal containers.
- Assist in the seasonal preparation of grounds by turning on all water lines, assemble sprinkler systems, and repair/install plumbing.
- Perform snow removal and salt/sanding on sidewalks, parking lots, and around public buildings, either manually or using snow removal equipment.
- Set up and take down chairs and tables for meetings and special events.
- Assist with/coordinating the unloading, lifting, or carrying supplies, and other tasks requested by any of the courthouse offices or board members.
- Assist in the performance of general maintenance, inspection, upkeep, and repair of public facilities, including painting, changing light bulbs, moving furniture, etc.
- Take inventory and order supplies as well as keep supply room stocked and cleaned.
- Oversee and approve the work of any outside contractors, as needed.
- Inspect work in progress and upon completion, ensure all requirements have been meet, as needed.
- All other duties as assigned.
Preferred Talents
- Ability to safely operate and care for cleaning equipment and tools, prepare and maintain accurate records, carry out written or oral instructions independently, and read/interpret blueprints.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive rapport with any contracted or employed cleaning staff, all fellow courthouse employees, all officials, and the general public.
- Thorough knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, equipment, and procedures as well as proper chemical use and dilution ratios.
- Ability to care for and safely operate tools necessary to maintain and repair electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and general fixtures/structures.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid state of Nebraska motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Electrical and plumbing experience.
Physical Requirements
A considerable amount of physical activity, including walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping. This position must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 60 lbs. Coordination and manual dexterity is necessary to operate hand and power tools and equipment involved in the maintenance and repair of public facilities. This position must be able to set up, climb, and operate while using free-standing ladders.
Working Environment
- Includes contact with dust, dirt, cleaning solvents, and difficult people.
- Work may be performed outdoors year-round and in inclement weather and requires the ability to tolerate a work environment that includes contact with acids, dirt, cleaning, solvent, and bacteria.
