SUMMARY: Under basic supervision, this is specialized support work performed at the Roswell Public Library. Work involves performance of routine tasks at the circulation desk, in support of the professional library staff and of basic customer service to the public.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Performs all circulation related tasks including:
- Checks in and checks out books at the circulation desk.
- Receives money for overdue fines, lost and damaged items, and printing.
- Assigns new library cards to public
- Answers Library Directional questions and simple reference and informational questions in person and over the phone.
- Refer public to other library staff for more complex reference and informational questions.
- Follows Library and City of Roswell policies and procedures
- Assists in planning, and implementation of programs
- Assist with processing and withdrawing Library materials
- Sets up and takes down library meeting rooms for library and community programs.
- Shelves and retrieves library materials and reads shelves to make sure materials are in order.
- Assists with development, preparation, and presentation of library programs, activities, and special events to meet the informational, educational, and recreational needs of the community.
- Serves as the Roswell Public Library representative on various committees and workgroups.
- Communicates effectively with staff and the public.
- Models excellent customer services practices.
- Assists with library security; checks to assure patrons comply with policies and procedures.
- Contributes to the Management Team by suggesting areas of improvement, innovation and training
- Maintains harmonious, courteous and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment in the Roswell Public Library.
- Applies Roswell Public Library policies and procedures.
- Applies City of Roswell policies and procedures.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Roswell and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Knowledge of:
- City policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of how to use a library and an interest in literature
Skill in:
- Ability to follow instructions accurately
- Ability to sort and file alphabetically and numerically
- Ability to deal effectively with library patrons.
- Ability to learn routine library procedures
- Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
Desirable Special Qualifications:
Bilingual in English and Spanish
LICENSE AND CERTICATION REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Must possess and maintain a Class D Driver’s License issued by the state of New Mexico.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed in a standard office and public library environment.
- Ability to maintain physical condition and stamina appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include sitting, standing or walking for extended period of time, driving, riding in vehicles.
- The usual requirements require the ability to stand for 4 hours at a time, lift up to 25 pounds, and push a loaded book truck weighing up to 120 pounds.
- Work may require lifting boxes of supplies, equipment and adjustment of furniture.
- Position requires frequent bending, reading squatting and lifting. The employee may occasionally work in moderately high places.
- Specific hearing abilities required by this job include computer pings, phone rings, and public conversations.
- Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to perform duties and adapt to flexible work schedules as established by management, which may include fairly irregular schedules, long hours, weekends and evenings. May be called when needed.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to type 30 words per minute and pass a job skills test.
- Must be able to pass a rigid background investigation including work history, criminal records, driving records and other records deemed necessary.
- Pre-employment drug screen administered by a city designated facility.
CONDITIONS OF CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT:
Incumbents and candidates must have a satisfactory driving record and insurability in accordance with the City’s insurance carrier.
